Posted: 3/20/08 at 1:19pmOk guys I dont know how i feel about this cry baby business. I think I am going to have to stay off these boards. I already bought tickets to it in april so I will simply just have to go in with an open mind. Just please don't castrate me if i like it. Not saying I will feel one way or another, but with a 54 dollar ticket I am going to try to have the best time I can.

"It's a matter of taste and taste IS ALWAYS SUBJECTIVE !!"
Well, there is good taste and bad taste. Sometimes its pretty obvious which end of the pendulum the taste is swinging to.

I hope you have a great time Dave!
I dont think I would see CRY-BABY and give it a 10/10 treatment with stage door and all that jazz...I have a problem that when I get excited stage dooring..sometimes... I cant control what comes out of mouth (Dave & WBaF knows that... I was with them stage dooring)
What if the cast asked me? I hope you guys like the show... I might accidentally say...oh yeah.. IT SUCKS soo bad!! lol! I cant really lie neither!
I might just see a play like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Boeing-Boeing or A Country Girl
and give it my 10/10 treatment...

See I am going to have to but I know what you mean. I hated the homecoming. I mean hated it. The only on broadway that I have ever hated. But I had to stage door because I love the stars so much. But my friend basically told Ian Mchsane that he didn't like the show. Control is hard Jay! lol.
But I will definitely be stagedooring bc I loved Harriet Harris from Frasier! But my same friend is going with the so their could be a problem! lol. Anyway I will take your 10/10 report for you jay! (PS get on yahoo so I can listen to the horrible demo of crybaby!)

Posted: 3/20/08 at 1:33pmNo, West, allow me to disagree ! Taste is personal and someone's masterpiece can be someone else's absolute crap ! It's not a mathematic formula, it has to do with beliefs, experiences, points of view, sensitivities etc., that are very different for each person !

^ i couldn't agree more. there are SO many factors that go into determining how a piece of work will effect one person versus another...
i have the utmost respect for those who don't like the show, but are interested in hearing why some people do, and having a real discussion about... but the posters on here who are so narrow minded that they treat any opinion that doesn't align with their own as "bad taste"...well that's just ludicrous!

I saw Cry-Baby Tue night. Yes, I belong to a papering organization and got comp tickets. I loved the show. I liked it much better than Hairspray. But then again I liked High Fidelity. I felt the music was acccessible and the song about "being infested with your love" was great. There were things that could be improved and the chemistry between the lead actors is one.
I see a lot of shows and it was one of the few that I did not feel had a "gay sensibility", which is something that as a straight woman I appreciate.
I have read all the negative posts and I for one would like to know the following information about those people:
1. Age
2. Income
3. Who they live with
4. Who pays for their tickets
I would guess that they are mostly rebellious, defiant teenage boys who live at home with their parents. And their parents pay for their tickets. These are the same ones who see every show 8+ times.
Get a life.

This is not only patronizing and disgusting, but it also isn't true.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

I hope he doesn't mind me answering for him, but I can guarantee you that isn't the case for Foster and several of the others.

Any help would be appreciated. I only spent 54 a ticket on this show and would just give them away and see something better if it's that bad. Any advice.
Thanks.

Irene, your condescending tone is neither warranted nor appreciated. I've been living on my own for over twenty years. How much I make per year is none of your business. Though I did PAY for my ticket as well as the people I went with.
Talking about get a life.

I am kind of curious where the word shill comes from. from reading the boards, I basically get what one is, but why are they called "shills"? just curious.

Stand-by

I am a 27 years old man who purchased 54 dollar ticket. I live with my boyfriend. I work in an off broadway theatre, and I am here as a struggling writer of theatre.
I have no affiliations with Crybaby, the actors, the writers, the Marquis Theatre, the producers, the movie, the production, the musicians, John Waters....the list goes on.
I have never seen the movie. I walked into the theatre with no idea of what I was about to see.
I saw crybaby, monday night, with three friends who did not like the show. I've had friends who've seen it since, who didnt like the show. I've seen this message board filled with people who don't like the show. Which made it that much harder, amidst their complaints, to say "I kinda enjoyed it."
I understand completly that I am a minority here.
Crybaby isnt Sondhiem, nor Hairspray, and (Thank God) it isnt Young Frankenstein. (which is another story all together.) Crybaby is a sarcastic fantasy, searching for its voice amidst its early previews.
I'm an optimistic person, in general and as a writer. I go into a show and want it to succeed, because I want every show to succeed. Hell, that's just good karma. Do I think it's fair to post what works and what doesn't work for a show in previews? In this day and age, it can't be stopped. If it's done tactfully and carefully, then yes. Say what you liked and what you didn't. Is it fair to claim that this is the worst theatrical experience you will ever endeavor, wish you hadnt paid for it, wish you could get two and a half hours back, wish people were not cast, wish the show closed soon...and so on? No. Not only is it unfair. It's rude. Very rude.
That said, I enjoyed the show. As an audience member, and as a writer who analyzes everything he sees. I could go down the list of what songs worked and what didnt...in fact. Get out your programs guys, (Act One) Yes, No, NO, Yes, Yes, No, No, No, YES, Middle, Yes, Yes, NO. (Act Two) Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No, Yes, Yes, Yes, No
That's 12 Hits/ 9 Misses. For every questionable musical moment, they follow it up with a number very very worthwhile.
But I will admit...that's not the best score a musical could have. They do have some time to get their act together. I beleive in them. If they dont, they dont. But until the show opens...and I see it again, I am going to continue liking this show for what it is trying to be.
Here's my opinion of what it needs to do.
The "Drapes" need to be darker. They're bad, right? Right now they come off as kinda bland. The good kids, are so good, and so pure...but there is not enough contrast with the Drapes. (Why they are that way...and how bad ARE they? Are they just having a good time? ) Right now, they are saying. "We are bad and we are here" But why? All of their songs need to be looked at. All of them.
James Snyder is awesome. He does not need to be recast. Watching him onstage, I know he is right for the role and is doing everything possible with what he has been given. But between "nobody gets me, let's get some air, baby, a little upset..." Someone needs to give him something worth singing. He has nothing worthwhile until "Do that again" at the end of the show.
and...why does Allison want to be bad, and fall for Crybaby?
Big questions guys, I know. But nothing they can't overcome if they work hard and write, write, write. Will it happen? Who knows?
Crybaby is not rocket science. There are no real "surprises" in the story. We know who will end up with who at the beginning. We know how it will happen before it happens. It's a simple story...we just need to have more fun getting there. We need to laugh with the drapes, and the good kids, care for crybaby and Alison...the way we care for Baldwin and Lenora.
Lets talk about the good. The choreography is amazing. The rest of the score is great. (lyric wise- there are some amazingly funny and talented lines here.) The supporting characters are wonderful. There is real talent up on stage, including the two leads. (This show's issues don't have anything to do with the talent on stage.) The music has a groove. There is a real sarcastic feel to the show (seriously, the kid in the iron lung cracked me up.) The show does have good things going for it.
This is a unique show. I think once it gets itself sorted out, it will find it's audience. That might not be Broadway, but there is something for it. But until then, until those official reviews come out, until that last tweak, clip, snip, and change have been made, can we at least try showing some support for a work in progress?
