"And closing notices will go up...when?
Predictions anyone?"
Tuesday, I see them taking a day to see if the performance boosts advance sales.
That's my thought too frogs.
I think that it will be up before the week's end. It hasn't made a profit any week it's been open. It won't win tonight and that won't translate into any sales this week, so there is no way it can stay open any longer.
Wow, nice job taking a positive thread praising a musical and turning it into a countdown of when it will close. God forbid someone dare to show a little enthusiasm for a show that, like the poster said, has already overcome monstrous odds against it. Maybe you guys could start your own thread instead of pissing on this one?
Just a thought.

Running at a loss every week rather than closing when it was obviously not selling at all because of the producer's egos or stupidity is overcoming odds??? In what world?
Not taking the bait, where you take one statement out of my post that has nothing to do with what the post was really about, and turning this into a punching match. Sorry.
Like I said, why don't you start an entirely different thread to attack the show instead of clicking on this one and pummeling a fan who dares to enjoy "Cry Baby"? Or does it give you some sort of sick enjoyment to try and stomp on what someone else is enjoying? Actually, don't answer that, I'd rather not know and make you feel like you need to post in this thread again.
There's pummeling and there's facing reality. Sometimes reality hurts.

I understand what your saying but there's really no Cry-Baby bashing going on in this thread (surprisingly). Even as a fan, I knew Cry-Baby only really had a chance at Choreography. I love the show to death (um hello, I've seen it 4 times!) but it has been unable to find a niche with audiences. It's not for everyone and I think that, in this thread at least, everyone is just posting realistically.
The OP's idea that Cry-Baby would win anything besides Choreography was ridiculous and the facts are there that the show is playing to low capacity and barely making a profit. It's unfortunately the fate for this show so I really don't see anything most of the posters said to be an attack. Sure there was negative comments, but what do you expect, it's a message board!
Neverandy, I think you really missed the point. The producers of Cry-Baby didn't think the show had a chance of winning best musical. The logic is that a lot of people who plan summer NY theater trips watch the Tonys first. For most people in the midwest, "Cry-Baby" would be much more up their alley than "In the Heights" or "Passing Strange." The producers obviously want to give the show one last chance to see if they can get a bump from the Tony telecast.
I'm not saying that you are wrong that it will close. I'm saying that winning/not winning has little to do with if they get a bump in ticket sales this particular year because the two leading shows are not inherently mainstream. We'll see what happens in the next week.

I think their performance tonight will spark alittle bit. I thought it was great and thought it totally deserved Choreography over In the Heights, who still has amazing choreography, just not as great as Cry Baby (and that was evident in the performances tonight)

Honestly...I loved Cry-Baby...I loved it in previews and I loved it when I saw it 2 weeks ago. It doesn't try to be deep. It's a silly, fun, bouncy show. Will all you theatre queens get the snobby sticks out of your asses and have some freakin' fun? Seriously...the theatre gods aren't going to strike you down for enjoying a frivolous, fun show like this. God it amazes me how no one just goes to theatre to just have fun anymore...oh wait...they do...they're just seeing Mamma Mia instead...oh wait...they're tourists. God forbid anyone be mistaken for one of those. It really pissed me off that when I saw it and all the people who were laughing and applauding the choreography during the show, couldn't get off their butts to applaud the hardworking people during the curtain call. 5 people in the orchestra section got up...couldn't tell if anyone got up in the mezz.
I really hope that Cry Baby doesn't close too soon. I think it is a good show and much better than the bashing it often gets.
Sucks for CryBaby, it really does seem to have great choreography.
I hate to see a show close, but it might be time for this one...
If I had never seen Cry Baby and my only exposure to the show was the performance last night, it might make me get a ticket. While the performance won't spike ticket sales, I'm willing to bet it gets a "slight" bump from some out of towners who saw the telecast, again, not enough of a bump to sustain it through the year. For what it's worth, I admit that I enjoyed the show and wish it the best over the next few weeks/months.

crushgroove's post is exactly why people react with attacks when someone is praising a show ! It is his right to LOVE the show and think it's the best thing to ever come to Broadway ! But calling all the people who don't agree, theater queens with sticks up their asses, who don't like having fun, is ignorant, stupid and fascistic ! Well, guess what, I LOVE shows that are silly and fun and I HAD NONE at this show ! In fact, I think it is one of the worst shows I've seen in my life with the absolute WORST lead I've ever seen ! But this is only MY opinion ! I understand and respect, that other people loved and enjoyed the show and I don't feel the need to call them names, just because we have different taste ! That's my difference with posters like crushgroove and the rest, from both sides !

Noel&Cole, do you ever contribute anything but Cry-Baby threads? This is the millionth "[insert show here] and the Tonys" thread to clog these boards! Oh well, I shouldn't have clicked here then...but I might as well add...
"And then many posters said it would never get any Tony noms and it got four including Best Musical."
And unfortunately, it did not win any Tonys. The weekly grosses are abysmal and the average ticket price has not gone over $40 except in its first week. The show got some exposure, and if they're lucky, there will be a slight raise in their weekly grosses, but I predict this show closing before the end of the summer (and I am not the type of person going around wishing shows would close).
Millie you are being very very optimistic about it lasting through to the end of the summer. They have been handing out HUNDREDS of comps the last few weeks. There just isn't enough money coming in, or the prospect of future sales right now to keep it open much longer. Expect an announcement in the coming days.
It is a shame Ashford got screwed AGAIN
He is going to wind up as the Susan Lucci of the Tonys if he is not careful. I loved Pierces remark about Curtains choreography during his intro.

The point is that if people want to bash a show, have the common courtesy to NOT do it in a thread that is obviously for fans. It's really that simple. If you want to bash the show, start a thread called "Cry-Baby Bashers Thread" or something.
And though some of the posters in this thread are not fans, talking about when the show is going to close is not bashing it, it's more or less indifferent because they're being realistic.
Right and I love how the poster above me obviously didn't read the rest of the thread...
pli, you sound like a very logical guy and I really like your posts, but it is after all a discussion board and a thread full of only love letters or only negative posts would get really boring very soon

My point was...the audience loved the show while it was going on...but when it came time to get up at the end during couldn't be bothered to get up out of their chairs to support it...or on these boards for that matter. Honestly I think a lot of people who bash the show, secretively haven't seen it. I just don't understand why people hate this show that much. Most of the bashing is like "well she sucks or he sucks"...that's not really forming an opinion. I'll admit...the leads aren't as charismatic as they need to be. Seriously how can you hate a show that has a number called "Girl Can I Kiss You with Tongue?"??

I'll take this before the atrocious ITH or Passing Strange any day of the week.
Bear in mind that the money a show has coming in has nothing to do with the quality of a show.
"Bear in mind that the money a show has coming in has nothing to do with the quality of a show."
This is true for artistic, innovative, groundbreaking shows !
For a show that poses everywhere as a big, COMMERCIAL, fun show for the family, NOT bringing in money, has EVERYTHING to do with the certain quality of the show !
None of the songs were very memorable. The dancing was pretty blah at best. While it had funny moments, James Snyder and Elizabeth Stanley were both pretty lame. I have no idea why this show was nominated for Best Musical over Young Frankenstein.
