Saw the Comedie Francais Live in HD production last night at the local cinema--all of 8 people were in the theater. Felt is was probably the finest production I'd ever seen of the play. It's amazing how well this show functions when cast with a strong Roxanne and an equally strong Christian. It was like seeing the play for the very first time.
Anyone else catch it?

Were you able to see the RSC production that played at the Gershwin about thirty years ago. Derek Jacobi gave one of the three or four best performances by an actor in a play that I have ever seen, up there with James Earl Jones in The Great White Hope, Jason Robards in A Moon For the Misbegotten, and Ian McKellen in Amadeus. Sinead Cusack was Roxanne, and more than up to the task of Roxanne. I do not remember who played Christian.
The thing I am curious about -- and I have no issue with sub-titles in most anything -- is whether you did not feel that it lost something by being in a foreign language? I am just curious because I was comtemplating getting tickets when it comes to to a cinema near me, but was leaning towards a 'no' because I thought it would lose a lot. Between the poetry itself and Cyrano's periodic tongue-twisting pronouncements (I am sure there is a better word, just can't think of it this second), I had expected that it would lose a lot.

I had planned on seeing it - but then realized it was a Wednesday and not Thursday and I had a conflict. Sigh.
Best production I saw was Stacey Keach and Stephanie Powers - With little notice, they brought their production to the University of California, Berkeley (where Keach attended). Weakest was the ACT "reunion" Peter Donat/Michael Learned version where they started in Act Five and then back to Act One as a "flashback" given that Donat and Learned were not as young as they were when they performed in the ACT version (which is available on DVD). It wasn't bad - just not as enthralling. Wait - actually, a more recent 2013 Chicago Shakespeare version with Harry Groener was the weakest. It was not enthralling at all.

Posted: 1/24/19 at 11:18pmI think is is one of the best CYRANO's I've seen. The first act is cluttered and problematic (it always us) but from that point on it's very effective.

Harris Yulin and Harriet Harris at the Guthrie several of my collegial BroadwayWorld posters lives' ago.
Yes I'm old enough to remember Harris as a young classical actor and leading lady.... a magnificent one. And I was lucky enough to be living in MPLS at the time to become a fanboy for the rest of my life.
