I mean...I wouldn't necessarily disagree with the idea that many Featured Performer winners indeed have showstopping moments.
I just bristle when someone says neither Beach nor Huffman had showstopping moments when they did. Feel free to not like or appreciate those moments, but the did actually happen.

Loved "The Full Monty" from that year.
"The Producers" won in every category that it was nominated for. Winning costumes & sets over "42nd Street" was quite surprising as well.

Beach and Huffman both deserved their Tonys. I think the voters neglect to think of the "triple threat" talents of actors in musicals and concentrate on the one good number or scene that supporting or even leads have (Katie Finneran). Cady certainly gave the audience that-fantastic singer, dancer and actress in a challenging role.

To this day, Cady/Ulla/THE PRODUCERS are a big part of my life.
For a performance/actress/show to have THAT much impact on me (and many, many others) I say they she/he/them are well deserved of any award they won.

Both Huffman and Beach were Tony-worthy the night I saw it, and Beach absolutely walked away with the show during "Keep It Gay" and "Springtime for Hitler."
And I agree with evic - saw Finneran in PROMISES, PROMISES and wondered what the big deal was. A capable performance but way too broad/shticky.
