I'd be surprised if it's not a hit. It's Broadway's answer to High School Musical only with hand-held mics so it's like Spring School Musical.
No, they use body mics, only the curtain call song has hand mics.
I don't see it being a hit at all. They seem to be TRYING to cash in on Spring Awakening's success and I don't see that happening again. The people in my acting class at the local college, who are big SA fans, have absolutely no desire to see it at all, especially after the Broadway on Broadway performance.
The target demographic is just under that of SA so many will have to have their parents take them to see it. And from what I've been reading of the reviews, this isn't exactly a family friendly show. So will the little tweens' parents really want their kids seeing this, not for $111 a ticket or even $60 I'm guessing.
This is all my own opinion but I just see the critics tearing this show apart, something which obviously didn't happen with SA. And I'm not that big of a fan of SA either.
"And from what I've been reading of the reviews, this isn't exactly a family friendly show."
What reviews? 3 Opinions, I think you meant. The show hasn't even started previews yet.
"They seem to be TRYING to cash in on Sprig Awakening's success and I don't see that happening."
No, they aren't. Right now there is no definite group they are trying to attract, but if you would really like you can find a "word of mouth" video from the show in Godspeed where people of all ages gave rave reviews. But, trust me, this show is not trying to attract the Spring Awakening crowd.
"But I just see the critics tearing it up"
The critics absolutely killed The Little Mermaid, that show is going on one year with many sold out performances.
I do respect your own opinion, but I just wanted to point out that your opinion is really just based on people who saw the dress rehearsal, and only 3 people have really come out with not liking it. Everyone else at it seemed to love it.
As far as Broadway on Broadway goes, you have the first bad review of the 13 performance that I have heard.

I do accept that.
I hate RENT, people accept that, and I thank them for that.
But when this person said "from what I've read", what I did, it was called making an inference, so my response was completely fine.
Also, I don't know anyone from the show, I don't even know anyone on Broadway, wish I did.

WHAT!?!?! It is attracting the TEENAGERS!!! It's called ****ing 13!!!
So, by your standards is Legally Blonde only attracting a Blonde audience?

Well what is a review but an opinion in the first place? I don't believe that just because someone doesn't get paid to write for a newspaper as a "critic" doesn't mean that their opinion is any more or less valid. And as I said, the subject matter which is present whether someone liked the show or not. Some may not have been offended by it, I doubt I would have been, but don't forget the Miley Cyrus photo shoot controversy. I'm not saying that type of thing would happen here but this is a show that will mostly depend on word of mouth and the subject matter may have an effect on that.
"But, trust me, this show is not trying to attract the Spring Awakening crowd."
I personally think it is. The success of Spring Awakening shows that a show performed by no named teens (or around that age) about teens can be a hit both critically and financially. In a similar way that the HSM/Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers craze shows that marketing to teens has once again become a financial goldmine. I don't think that this show would have been able to happen say 8 years ago. Off-Broadway maybe, but Broadway? I don't think so. I personally found it pretty obvious that they were marketing to the tween/teen age group by who they gave out the dress rehearsal tickets to. Why not have it be available to say all students in the area or people under 25 or something. They wanted teenagers because the show is about teenagers.

I don't see how you can compare a Disney property with this. That movie has been beloved by people for years, no matter how bad it is there was no chance that it wouldn't be a hit. If its a familar property, like their movies, its basically critic proof.
I know some may not consider my opinion because I have not seen the show and I won't be seeing it. There's nothing in it for me that I find remotely interesting besides JRB's music but even that wouldn't be enough. I may be proven wrong by my predictions and if so good for the cast and crew, it sucks when any show has to close. Though I think that the theater space could be used for something more worthwhile than this.
I'm not comparing it to Disney property, I'm comparing it to another show.
The 13 sign, does not have a man on top of a women ready to get it on, and although 13 is a place where Broadway has gone before, it doesn't deal with sex, pregnancy, suicide, and the many other things Spring Awakening performs every night. 13 is a much more innocent, but at the same time very true to life musical, and I say that as someone who has seen it.
Yes, a review is an opinion but that fact that your seriously taking the opinions of 3 teenagers who didn't like the show, which I must say are less than the people who did like it is pretty sad, I mean it would be one thing if this was a school newspaper, but for a Broadway musical, I just think you should try to listen to more reviews from experienced writers, and pay attention to what the good ones say as well.
Also, the fact that your not seeing it based on reviews from a dress rehearsal is your loss.
"So, by your standards is Legally Blonde only attracting a Blonde audience?"
No, 13 is a show about teenagers. How many people over the age of 20 is going to go on impulse to 13?
The critics absolutely killed The Little Mermaid, that show is going on one year with many sold out performances.
Oh come on....The Little Mermaid has the Disney marketing machine behind it, and is based on a very popular and recognizable film. It was in a much better position to withstand bad reviews than 13 will be. To compare the two is ridiculous.

DefyingGravity - you're kinda grasping on to any type of argument you can, if only to reinforce the fact that you could "relate" and that you "got it"... WE UNDERSTAND. Ok?
At first, I enjoyed reading the intellectual banter between you and the BWW Army of '13' haters but now you're just running on an empty tank. Quit while you're ahead! You're starting to become a persistent Schill for the show.
1.) sorry honey, there IS a target audience. you're just f*cking ignorant if you are going to dispute that
2.) TLM doesn't need any artistic value (or critic respect)... it's Disney.
3.) Your example between '13' and LEGALLY BLONDE was just terrible.
You like the show. Great! Go discuss it in the love thread. You will find that the negativity, for this show, will only get worse. Just watch. Save it for something that matters.
