I ask you.
why is the circle in the sqaure so small?
They had a big plot of land so they put a big monster theater on it.The powers that be wanted a big Broadway theater to accommodate big musicals and a small intimate theater. They got both.
Before it was built, the skyscraper in front of it was the site of the Loew's Capitol theater. It was almost 3 times bigger with over 5,000 seats.
Good to have you back, Dollypop
These boards are not the place to make fun of theaters for their size. Gershwin is very self-conscious. Pull the snark levels back down to "light."

It ate all its vegetables.
Because I'm has a.lot.of seats.
I am not making fun of its size. It is a big theater and I accept it and am not dissing it in any way.
The Uris Brothers were compensating.
I remember when it was called the Uris. It's first show was Via Galactica .The original title before Via was Up. The Uris was being sarcastically called the Urine. The joke going around was see Up @ The Urine. It was thought to be hilarious but I never got the joke.
No, Ken Mandelbaum writes about the joke in "Not Since Carrie." The Marquis said "Up" / "Uris." ...UP...YOURIS.....UP URAS....get it?
Aha. Now I get it. I had the general idea but did not get the pronunciation. Thanks for the correct info.

Why is it called "Circle in the Square" when it is never set up as a circle -- usually an oval. Why not call it "Oval in the Square?
I always wondered about that myself.

Circle in the Square was an off-Broadway theater company that moved uptown to the new theater under the Uris.
