Cant Smile Without You....Make It Stop!!

Review
Manchester Palace Theatre

The moment a character announces shes called Mandy you know your in for a bumpy ride...a bumpy ride would have been fine, but this ride never even started.

This is plain and simply a ghastly musical with a storyline which has been written on the back of receipt.Never have i seen a show start off so bad and manage to get even worse as the painful night goes on.

The story, Band audition for TV talent show, producer only wants lead singer, lead singer goes solo, meets girl, bumps head, forgets everything.Oh but don't worry there are sub plots, but they are to pointless and dull to mention

Apart from the 2 female leads this was one of them shows where everything was bad, nothing made sense and it stank of cheap, cash in and devoid of anything remotely original.

The set looked like it had been borrowed from pop idol, the lighting was hideous and predictable, the jokes were unfunny (lets make a ting noise and look at the audience when a character mentions a line from a manilow song) and it treated the audience (blue rinse crowd ) like it was stupid...example, a stupid cheap sign would lower from the roof and tell the audience where the action was taking place, as if they couldnt tell)

The directing was dreadful and predictable and the band sounded to empty and shallow to make any kind of impact.
And what of Chesny????? HE WAS A ONE HIT WONDER FOR A REASON!!!.His singing was average but his voice got worse as the night went on, he can't act and has the personality of a tea bag.

To use Manilow's songs in this way made the perfectly good songs feel tired. How he has let this happen i don't know.I mean Copocabana the musical is hardly a work of a art but at least its fun, this was over 2 hours of pain.I would have had more satisfaction having my teeth pulled.

If ever there was a reason to stop with the Jukebox Musicals well this is it.I had heard talks that this could get in to a London but after seeing it i doubt it would even get in to blackpool

hahahaha
Sitting in the Hippodrome in Bristol on Saturday nigh you crossed my mind a few times as i was thinking repeatedly to myself 'What the F*** is SADM2 gonna make of this next week?' The audience in Bristol seemed to be blue rinse and hen nights!
lol
AMATEUR! or what!
Like I said in the 'what's the next jukebox musical' thread -there is no way Barry Manilow has seen this and let it go ahead!!!!

I really want to see this now for the trainwreck value. Is it bad in the "laughing because I can't believe they put this on stage" bad way or "I'm bored and want to shoot myself" way?

Its bad in a way that after 10 mins you spend the rest of the show thinking about what you want for tea.

Its very very dull, but also laughable, the mistakes are to many to mention, and i dont mean small mistakes i mean huge big glaring mistakes.

For musical train wreck lovers like me you simply must go to this BUT it is one of the hardest shows you'll ever do. It makes Fields Of Ambrosia -saw that 4 times! etc etc look like works of pure art. Be warned but go all thee lovers of flops and disasters!
SADM2, don't apologize - you are spot on with every comment!

So the Manchester Evening News rarely gives a production at the Palace a bad review, if they dont like it they normally just pick out the good points and leave it at that, so they must have really hated this show

MEN Review
AS the success of Abba musical-turned-movie Mamma Mia has proved, audiences can’t get enough of shows using the songs of a famous artist to create a whole new production to sing and dance along to.

Can’t Smile Without You is the latest to join the list – using the extensive back catalogue of American singer-songwriter Barry Manilow weaved around a new storyline.

The plot, as you would expect, is pretty silly – budding musician Tony Lowiman (geddit?) and his band head off on a stag do to New York, then decide to enter a TV talent show while they are there.

Tony, who is having second thoughts about his wife-to-be, meets a pneumatic blonde PA called Mandy, obviously, and falls for her.

But when he returns back home to the UK he gets in a scrape and ends up losing his memory, as you do, and has to piece together his life.

Nineties pop hearthrob Chesney Hawkes is a likeable enough Tony, and impresses most when he’s at his piano performing belters like Mandy.

But better by half is ice cool blonde Siobhan Dillon as his love interest – here in her first leading lady role since coming runner-up in the TV talent search to find a Maria for The Sound of Music and in formidable voice.

Camp

Cheesy and camp are now expected in this musical genre – but unbelievably for a show boasting both the music of Manilow and starring Chesney Hawkes it is lacking in both.

It takes itself just that little bit too seriously and lacks the fast pace required for a romp through so many hit songs.

While Mamma Mia laughs at itself in how silly the links are between action and song, here they just don’t even seem to bother.

There is a feeling that some of the fantastic songs of Manilow are just stuffed in to fill time rather than to meaningfully add to the action – two of his biggest hits Can’t Smile Without You and Ready To Take a Chance Again are really rather wasted here.

Slimy

Comedy is left almost exclusively to the role of slimy TV producer Jeff – and tellingly it is he who gets the biggest cheers at the end of the show.

Actor Howard Samuels is brilliant in the role – and is the star of the show’s undoubted sequin-and-feathered highlight of Copacabana.

There had been rumours that Manilow himself would be attending on one night of this tour – and there was much excitement when an uncanny Barry lookalike took his place in the front row of the Palace Theatre.

But rather like the show itself, it wasn’t the real McCoy.

I have been hearing that Francesca Jackson and Siobhan Dillon were hands down the best thing(s) about this production.

Any reviews contradicting that impression thus far?

re: Cant Smile Without You....Make It Stop!!

Siobhan is getting good reviews, she sings well and acts pretty well but you will have forgot about her the moment you leave the theatre. Its not her fault its just she has no character to play, its not like they are amazing performances in a flop, they are just better than the show.

Francesca is fine to but she has even less of a part, they both deserve better
