Caroline Grosses (and why you should go see the show)

I am shocked that Caroline filled the O'Neill theater to a 65% capacity (an all time low for that show I believe). Was anyone else shocked by this?
Ive said it before and Ill say it again...whoever has not seen this show must go NOW. It is a profound musical on many different levels. It speaks to the viewer in ways that one could not imagine. Tonya Pinkins' performance as Caroline will go down in history. Lots Wife is a teary eyed, powerhouse song...the best 11 O Clock number since Roses Turn. The show is tasteful (unlike many shows on Broadway now), classy, smart, clever, and fresh. It must been seen by all. Caroline is a sophisticated and near-flawless evening at the theater. It justifies the $100 you payed for a ticket. You are repaid with wonderful memories and a truly unique performance that will almost likely never been seen for a long, long time. Go see Caroline. If you dont, you will regret it. This is a musical that will be talked about for years to come.

Actually, last week was the all-time low -- 61.3%

Well now we're clear why it's closing. Even as last weeks are being advertised, it's at an all-time low. Which for that show, is saying a lot.

It closes on the 29th. I am so glad I saw this show while in New York. And the Original Cast Recording is wonderful. There has been a lot of debate over this show on the msg. boards here. If for no other reason....see this show because it is a new work, not rehashed from a movie, or a revival or based on music from another medium. It deserves to be seen. My understanding is that it is closing on the 29th due to the Repub. Convention (Along with a few other shows). I guess it is thought that these shows will not survive the few weeks that the convention will take over Manhattan (near the theatre district). It was reported on our news here in Denver that we are the 3rd (I think!) most popular destination for New Yorkers during the convention. So people are leaving and I guess people are not going to NYC during that time. Which translates into low ticket sales.

It was, but I find the argument that it didn't have enough advance sales to be odd when it usually played to high 80's to 90's capacity. I guess the average ticket price wasn't high enough. But still...

re: Caroline Grosses (and why you should go see the show)

Sorry if I wasn't clear....right, it is not selling tickets. The article I read eluded to that. And If I remember correctly, production costs. With it (and the others that are closing)they are closing it before the convention because they feel that ticket sales will dip even lower and they will lose even more. So it is a combination of things with the convention factored in. Make sense?

re: Caroline Grosses (and why you should go see the show)

i hate to say it, but i feel like some of it had to do with the Tony's performance. I was talking to some people who didn't know anything about the show except for what they had seen on the Tonys. they all groaned when I brought up the title and said that they hated the performance and thought the entire show was just going to be Tonya Pinkins screaming. Out of context, I guess I can understand that. I saw the show before the Tonys broadcast, but did anyone who saw the Tonys before actually seeing the show get a bad impression of the show as a result?

The show did get a bad rep from the Tony preformance. A lot of people I know stayed away from it because the Tony performance wasn't good.

re: Caroline Grosses (and why you should go see the show)

Actually, the Tony performance made me even more interested in the show. Up until then I had very little intention of ever seeing it. I realized that Ms. Pinkins was having trouble, but I thought the song itself was amazing, which made me want to see the show. I'm probably an exception, though.
