Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:11pmFair, don't base your opinion on one song... this show isn't about a hummable tune... this is music that really should be heard in the context of the actions of the story... THEN, the music would make more sense on it's own...

I did try! I saw the show. I wasn't into it. I've spoken with people about the show and some have suggested I listen to the music as well. It's not working for me.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:22pmWhen Veanne Cox started one of her songs near the beginning, my friend leaned over and said to me, "I HATE recitative," and I whispered back, "Well, you're in a for a long night, baby..."

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:46pmFair to Middlin, don't worry about it. My boyfriend saw it with his best friend, and they both hated it with a passion. I have the CD, I like the music and can appreciate it. BUt it's not a hummable catchy show. I do wish I saw the show itself, though.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:51pmYou aren't supposed to like it, it's good for you! I hear you. Love Tonya. Love Kushner. Didn't love the show. But knew it was good for me to see it. Did not buy the soundtrack, though.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:51pmThere are so very few people who saw Caroline who just thought it was "eh". It's one of those shows you either love with a passion or despise with all your being.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 1:54pmI thought it was quite good - I didn't think it was the work of genius that a lot of people seemed to believe.

I actually thought it was eh.
I appreciated it, but I didn't like it. I could see what other people liked about it, but I didn't like it myself.

sndtrklvr - you couldn't have bought the soundtrack - since there isn't one available. Now you COULD buy the Original Broadway Cast Recording - but that would be very different.
*sheesh*

Posted: 9/28/04 at 2:51pmI loved it and found the show to be very thought-provoking as well as providing some of the best performances I've seen in a long time. Jarico thought it was boring when we saw, though he admits he was pretty tired from 5 days of NYC turbo-vacationing, but the show stayed with him and now he really likes it. It's certainly not a show for everyone, but I found it to be a unique artistic achievement. Kushner doesn't want to hand out a simple story on a platter and then hold the audience's hand as they are spoon-fed the story. He finds a abstract way to tell a story using personification, history, theology, mythology, symbology, urban legend, and other literary devices to elevate the common man (on in this case, woman) as a hero of epic proportions. I find it utterly fascinating.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 2:54pmI don't think she was drawn as a hero at all but as a human being just doing what she needed to do (and hated to do) for her and her family's survival. No hero would treat a child the way she treated that boy.

Well sweetie, I really mean it! It certainly is brilliant - there are very few book mistakes if any, and Tesori's music should have had no competition at the Tony's. An abundance of gorgeous, painstaking metaphors, 3 heart-felt story lines, and honest character construction in addition to the visual and aural eye candy, make this musical as close to perfect as anyone can wish. Is it for everyone? Certainly not.
Kushner's heros and protagonists always have many problems (and by problems I don't mean mistakes)- and he is even criticized that his characters are unrealistic!

mister Matt - exactly - and why should anyone spoon-feed an audience? thats what's killing America - the "dumbing down" of all aspects of life. I love the fact that with Kushner (not unlike Sondheim) you have GOT to listen to the show and give it thought in order to get all the proper entertainment value out of it. I LIKE that.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 3:02pmSilly my hebrew butt. MOVIN' OUT was a theatrical experience I can only imagine being matched by the opening night of WEST SIDE STORY.

Posted: 9/28/04 at 3:04pmwow - I can't tell if you're being serious or very sarcastic. I haven't seen Movin Out - so I can't say - but Caroline was one of the best pieces of theatre I've seen in years.

CAROLINE was crap. Sorry guys, it just was.
MOVIN' OUT and MAMMA MIA are the definition of musical theatre. Those shows have song and dance and an actual plot unlike your precious civil rights show.
