Holy crap.

Well, my Google-fu is failing me tonight. Usually I can find almost anything in teh entyre whirled.

But if it's Kaga, some English language site is bound to mention it. (I hope.)

Okay, I know everyone thinks I am a bona fide DOTV hater, and I would just like to clear the air.
I went to this show wanting to be it's greatest fan, and I had heard so much about TanzDV, But this version seemed to have an excess of humor where as Tanz was darker, more realistic.
I actually sat back and enjoyed it, I was wishing for a different angle, But it was enjoyable. Just wanted to mention that.

I'm not sure if he is, because I don't speak Japanese:
but here is the site (pity it wasn't in English)

To tell you the truth,

I've always been (at some stage in my life) a fan of Crawford and Steinman. The Bat albums blew me away, and have been with me since a young age, and Phantom was just - wow! First time I heard it I was mesmerized! That and Bat 2 are some of my favourite albums.

When I found out Crawford would be in Dance of the Vampires, my two big heroes, I was over the moon. It was a really great day and, of course, I begged to see the show. I didn't end up seeing it, because it closed so soon, but even after all the wreckage - with the critics and the fans - I wanted to see it. When DotV failed and set Jim back, I was really pee'd off with Crawford. A lot of Jim's fans (including myself, on occasion) seem to blame Michael for his artistic input: which ruined the show. I don't think, looking back, it was his fault (but he certainly had something to do with it). The problem was, translating a musical that was irrelevent to "Broadway culture" at the time. It would have to have been a big sell if they were going to (directly) translate it. So they made a compromise, with all the wrong people IMO, and it ended up being this big disaster. But the show, everywhere else, is gorgeous.

I don't hate Dance of the Vampires (it's pretty amusing), but I hate how it set back everyone involved. It nearly ruined Steinman's career, and the same with Crawford (people think that both men are "one hit wonders" i.e. the Bats with Steinman and Phantom with Crawford). I wish, with all my heart, that they had of done a better job of the show: because I think Crawford, in the original vision, could have been amazing. I also think that Tanz is much better than Phantom: more music, less motifs, and more diversity and thrills

Good luck to Tokyo. I know they'll do a rad job of it

Thanks, Fenris.

Kaga's not on there. I recognize some of those faces, though, mostly from Japanese Les Miz productions.

Pity. I mean, he could've recycled some of his chairman outfits. re: Carpe Noctem

No worries.

If you're familiar with the Tanz score (and Steinman's music) there is a Japanese recording of the FINALE (Tonight is What it Means to be Young) from the 80s.

The song was (originally) in the film, Streets of Fire, but recycled into this. This should give you some indication of what Tanz will be like in Japanese re: Carpe Noctem And I play this track quite frequently

EDIT: Just copy and paste the URL. If it doesn't work, scroll down to the bottom at: https://www.carpe-jugulum.com/mm/other/index.html

Lots of beauties at this site btw.

DOTV is definitely at Lincoln Center, I was there the night they recorded it.

I saw DOTV right before it officially opened. It had already been "frozen". Aside from Michael Crawford looking and sounding like Grandpa Munster, I thought it was one of those "So bad, it's good" shows. I had a great time. The over the top music, the big bombastic ballads and over produced orchestration were so beyond extravagant that you couldn't NOT be pulled in. I have 2 live recordings and a DVD of the show. Somedays you just need a fix, ya know?!? I have emailed Jim Steinman a gazillion times about releasing the amateur rights, but to no avail.

rockfenris2005, thanks for the direction on the site to the Japanese recording--the Finale is one of my favorites from this show!

One of my favorite shows....I really want to see the rehearsal and opening night footage that was on Broadway.com a while ago, but they've removed it. Does anyone know if the clips are anywhere else on the web?

No problems, Rose

Re: Steinman's email. He never replies to it (as far as we know). He is a recluse, and a very private guy: and if he wasn't, the rights aren't available either. The American producers said "no" to my friend when he inquired (actually several friends, because I know several people who tried doing it). However, the German Tanz was originally written in English: so there's a chance you could produce that version (and to that I say "go for it")

That website is seriously the best thing ever. Not to mention I've been wanting to hear the Confidence Man as well. Thank you soooo much for posting! *downloads every DOTV song and finds blank cds*

Tears.

That was one of my favorite shows ever.

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

Confidence Man is brilliant. I think the whole show is available there? It's a desk recording (or a rip from a video) of the Queen's show that was staged in 1986. Some of the arrangements and songs have changed since then, and it's a little different from the script I have (I'm trying to put on a performance with a group of mine, someday, and working on a CD for charity). Some other Steinman musicals for your collection (if you're interested). All of the live shows are available at: www.realmofdreams.com (great guy who owns it) in the Steinman section of his site. There is:

The Dream Engine (songs from Jim's first show: and you get to hear the origins of Total Eclipse of the Heart, The Tanz Overture and many others)
More Than You Deserve (the show where Jim and Meat Loaf first famously met. Kim Milford also starred, along with Stephen Collins, Graham Jarvis, Fred Gwynne and Leata "Hair" Galloway)
Neverland (the musical that became Bat Out of Hell: now referred as the title of Bat Out of Hell the Musical for a future revival)
Whistle Down the Wind (Washington D.C. Only Act One, appalling sound quality)
A whole huge section of demos and rehearsal stuff on D.O.T.V.
Garbo the Musical (Jim's other flop from 2002: was a lukewarm disaster in its Swedish premiere. A lot of great songs, like "City of Black and White" and "Dark Night of the Soul". Some of these could be on Bat 3)

And if you're interested in another one, go to "Multimedia" or "Other Children" at Jim Steinman's webpage: and search for "Rhinegold the Musical". It is a crack-up, and a great show: Jim in his early days at the Mercer Arts Center (meeting ground of KISS); starring Andre DeShields, Jessica Harper, Mimi Kennedy and Craig Richard Nelson.
