I'm actually quite excited for this! Although Carrey is a long stretch, he does comedic evil pretty well (i.e. The Grinch, The Riddler). As for Jake Gyllehaal, he's a terrific actor and a wonderful comedian...but I've never really heard him sing (minus he comedic singing on SNL). I think he'll be able to pull it off though. Now my thoughts on Lola. I'm definitely against Beyonce. I suppose she has the vocal chops, but her acting leaves a lot to be desired. Especially her comedic acting. Plus, let us all look back to how she butchered the musical tribute at the Oscars. The Selma Hayek idea is alright, but it would take away from Lola's very funny over the top fake latina accent since Hayek already talks that way. I'd like to see a newcomer in the role possibly. I love the idea of Ana Gasteyer as Gloria Thorpe, and she does have the Thorpe style voice. As for Meg...I'm just not sure. There are so many options. I can't wait to see this movie though.
I agree with you but I don't think Hollywood execs would really care. It's Beyonce. She'll bring in a new generation to that movie and their box office numbers would deff increase.
I really would like to see Beyonce as Lola. Catherine Zeta-Jones would also be fantastic. I think Kristin Chenoweth as Sister/Doris or maybe even Gloria would work.
I'm sure he'll be great, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is an ideal Lola.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I'm definitely interested in seeing how this pans out, in a positive way.
Carrey CAN sing well enough for this, and to those of you that are the first to down his acting abilities, go out and rent "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind", THEN try to prove your point. He doesn't always play over the top funny man, it's just what he is most known for. And it all depends on the movie/role/director.
So i say give him and whoever else gets cast in this before you believe it will suck. I'm not even a huge Damn Yankees fan, but i'm willing to give this a chance.
I don't believe the problem of "The Majestic" was Carrey and/or his acting. Some people HATED the Majestic, some really liked it. But i don't think your point of "go out and rent the Majestic and see how bad Jim Carrey is" is valid or true at all.
I know someone who is very close to this project and told me that originally, they were going for an unknown as Lola, and eventually give her the Julia Ormond is Sabrina treatment, and hope for the "Who IS this fantastic woman?!" reaction that Ormond, unfortunately, didn't get a lot of. He said that last year they were considering Anika Noni Rose, but are now thinking of going with big names. They could still be going with the unknown idea, though. In terms of celebrities, my personal choice would be Natalie Portman. I know she's a little white-bread, but I think that she's incredibly beautiful and pretty seductive (she was the one saving grace of The Other Boleyn Girl). I also know that she is a trained dancer and has sung in the past.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
Oh, wow, I would orgasm if they got Anika Noni Rose to play Lola. She would be sublime! As in, perfection! What a pity that it isn't happening. I thought of Natalie Portman too, it's not someone that could just inhabit the role naturally, but with the right director she'd be good, especially considering that Lola was the ugliest woman in America or whatnot. Portman would bring that past into the part. My problem with Beyonce is that I think she's just not funny since he acting tends to be so transparent, the dancing and the singing would be great, but I think moments like the scene before "Whatever Lola Wants" would be lost on her.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I wanted Jake Gyllenhaal to do the BAT BOY movie musical!! THAT is a musical that is very appropriate for today's movie musical comeback.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Anne Hathaway was in talks to play Lola in the City Center Encores! production of the show last year before film conflicts made her unavailable.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she ends up attached to this film remake.
