I hope no to Marin... the key changes made to the songs (esp. Eve Was Weak) with her as Margaret really didn't do it for me. She wasn't "scary" or intense enough. Buckley, and Maureen McGovern were fierce... Marin falls more into the Barbara Cook category.

Thank you, tourboi :) I'm glad someone agrees with me. I respect Marin as a performer and vocalist, but I thought her Margaret White was far from intense or intimidating. I didn't think Molly Ranson was that powerful either, however, so it's not like there's that battle for power that Hateley and Buckley achieved. The last reading was an improvement, but not there yet. I'm very interested to hear what another could bring to the table.

I think the core songs are definitely there, but some lyrics need to be reworked and I don't feel as if the flow of the show is being addressed. Regardless of how good a song might be, if the show starts dragging, you're audience gets bored.

I could agree with that. I love Marin as well, but there was room for improvement, and Molly as well, I suppose.

I think Carolee Carmello could be a fine contender...and although Jen was a perfect Sue, I feel she could handle Carrie, and I'd love to see what Allison Fischer could do with Sue. She could very realistically play a teenager.

To be honest I wasn't fond of a lot of the leads in the reading, with the exception of Sutton and Diana DiGarmo, and whoever played Billy.

This has to be a joke.

I was disappointed in what I heard of the reading, as well. The opening number was greatly improved, but so much of the rest of the material took a big step backwards. Gore's new melodies were just not as memorable and Pitchford's tries at writing lyrics for American teenagers were still very iffy. And why was I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance cut down? It's probably the highlight of the show. Marin is a wonderful singer, but I don't think she is well-cast here.

I do think there is a genuinely good show buried in Carrie, and I'm glad that people think it's worth the effort, but I'd rather there just be the memory of the hugely ambitious, legendary disaster that it was (and the material that is available from that production) than to get a mediocre, toned-down, more timid resurrection, which is what I thought the reading sounded like.

That said, I've read that Gore and Pitchford have spent a lot working after the first reading and I hope sincerely that it's getting better. Updated On: 9/17/10 at 12:01 PM
