Why are some songs left out? Like the one in Wicked for example?
and the overture in Legally Blonde? is there a specific reason why they choose not to include certain songs on the recordings?

Brad: it depends. They didn't put 'Wicked Witch of the East' on the 'Wicked' cast recording because it was a lot of dialogue and pretty spoilery. Some cast recordings, they don't have the space for all the songs. For the 'Sweeney Todd' revival, they were only planning one CD originally so didn't record the entire show, then ended up releasing two CDs after all. I don't know about 'Legally Blonde'. But really there's all manner of reasons, it could be anything. ^_^

The Legally Blonde Tony voters CD included the Overture as well as some additional musical material that was eventually left off the actual release. I guess sometimes they just choose not to include some material which is odd because they obviously paid for the studio time so it's a little silly to record something and then not release it.

The song was left out of the cast recording of Wicked because it spoils a major plot point.
Some things are left out, overtures, reprises, etc, for time needs. Some recordings make no sense as a double disc.
And it really depends on the show. Is the overture from Legally Blonde really necessary? Not really.

Posted: 7/5/08 at 2:31pmI don't care! In my opinion, any sung part in a musical should be put on cd. As well as Overture, Entr Acte, dances ... It should be recorded in its full glory.

Yes, but 2 CDs worth of material means more time in the studio means more $$$$$. It's probably a little unfair to say producers are cheap, but it's not strictly inaccurate either. We really really should be thankful we get as many cast recordings with as many songs as we do, theatre CDs never being as big sellers as popular music, instead of always harping on about what will never be.

Some cast albums have been butchered by putting them on 1 LP/CD
Some examples are
Follies - Original
Inner City - Would love to have this on a CD

Posted: 7/5/08 at 3:54pmI hate how new Sweeney Todd recording was done. I know why it happened that way but the second CD only has six songs on it! They could've included "Parlour Songs" and "City on Fire", which I thought were fantastic in that production.

The Sweeney revival is a different story; they had 2 discs worth of material, thought they could get away with one disc, didn't record the entire score, and then poof, decided to have 2 discs without going back in an recording the rest. Since those orchestrations are gorgeous, especially City on Fire, it is a real tragedy.
But things like Legally Blonde and Wicked really don't cry out for a "complete 2 disc recording". Makes no sense. I'm sure, eventually, we'll get a complete Wicked with the additional material. But producers have no reason to spend more money on a complete recording when it isn't necessary.

Yes, I do agree, some shows do cry out to have everything recorded, such as a classic, like South Pacific. However, I do feel sometimes that by not giving you everything, or by not having a person give their best performance, the cast recording, while the show is still running, is almost a way to pull you back in again. A shame, but it works for me, as I've seen Gypsy countless times now just to witness the final moments on that stage, which rip my heart out and fullfill it in everyway, all at once.
Soory, i just can't wait anylonger for a Gypsy CD!!! Plus, it sounds like they'll include the ending!

The only thing that will make the Follies album travesty hurt a little less (aside from the fact that I have the soundboard)-
Dear Follies Fans,
I'm sorry. I should have went with Columbia.
Sincerely yours,
Hal Prince
Tom Shepard said he wanted to do it. Columbia would have done it, but Hal was unimpressed with their marketing of the Company album. Was the Follies album marketed so well? And shouldn't he have known? What was the last good cast album Capitol made? The Music Man? In 1957?

No, probably FUNNY GIRL (1964) was Capitol's last really good cast album.
FOLLIES, however would be their last cast album.
Fitting.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Posted: 7/6/08 at 4:57amI just saw Jersey Boys, and for some reason I'm thinking of "I Go Ape" from the show - it's not on the cast recording. There might be some other songs too. I have to compare the song list with the CD.

Speaking of Funny Girl, just a bit off topic, but I wish the movie soundtrack had been remastered better (or at all?). I love Barbra's performance on the soundtrack more, but I find myself cringing at the quality. The OBC sounds much better. And it has Cornet Man.

Posted: 7/6/08 at 7:41ami always wish SIDE SHOW had been recorded in it's entirety. there is so much left off of this recording that it feels very incomplete compared to the show itself.
#20re: Cast Recordings
Posted: 7/6/08 at 10:48amI agree folkboy, but I'm just glad ANY of it was recorded!
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Posted: 7/6/08 at 10:53amI live in a delusional world where they recorded Side Show in its entirety with the OBC and one day they will release the entire show. On iTunes or something. I realize there is zero chance of this.

Bryan. Do you have the money to finance the production of a 'Cry Baby' CD? If so, go and offer your services to the producers TODAY, because that's the only way a 'Cry Baby' cast recording will get made.

Speaking of Funny Girl, just a bit off topic, but I wish the movie soundtrack had been remastered better
I was so hoping the reissue would be improved (maybe even use the longer Overture heard only on the Quadrophonic Lp edition) - but to my ears it sounds exactly the same as the first CD release from 1986. It does play better i you put the songs back in the right order, starting with the Finale, which is actually the main title music.
I have heard that La Striesand keeps a tight control over her Columbia catalogue and dictates what gets reissued/remastered. She reportedly hates the Broadway version of FUNNY GIRL - probably because it is on Capitol (EMI) and she has no control over it.
