Cast recordings - commission#1

Do the performers get commission in the sales of the cast recording?
What about the composer? (I'd imagine this is a given, but still I'm not sure)

Posted: 8/16/09 at 10:24amI could have helped you out with this info if the producers of a current popular musical had accepted my offer to underwrite the production costs of an OBC recording. Now, sadly, I'll never know.

I'm pretty sure the performers don't get any royalties, and they're paid a lump sum initially to record. However, I'm unsure, but it definitely varies depending on the record company doing the production of the CDs.
Also, composers definitely get royalties based on their ASCAP/BMI contracts. And of course, the record company would try to keep as much profit as possible...
Hope this helps!

There was an Ask Playbill.com feature about this:
