re: 'Catch Me If You Can' Clips

I think people are picking this to death because there is a certain "emptiness" about it. I haven't seen the show, but I wondered, even before they started working on it, how I would react to these characters singing and dancing. I'm basing my prejudice on the movie. The characters, especially the two leads, aren't exactly likable. There's a definite dark edge to them. Both are fascinating character studies, to be sure, but these are imbalanced, unhealthy people playing games with each other and with the world.

So, to see them singing and dancing with such exuberance, not unlike Hairspray, is a bit ... empty, as I initially said. I'm not pulling for them or "celebrating" with them as they belt to the rafters and fling their arms around to the bouncy music. These songs don't seem to be coming from the heart, because these characters have no hearts to begin with. So we're left with eyes wandering, to pick apart the scenery, the colors, the dance steps, probably even the exit signs in the theatre ... because of a lack of being drawn in.

Just a guess. And a "pre-judging," no question about it.

I think I would have preferred a darker approach to the material. More cerebral. A real study as to what makes these two (main) men tick. Not a celebration of their craftiness. Two bars into the music, and you've already said all that needs to be said about them, as far as that goes.

best12bars - interesting concept! I can definitely see what you mean by that, and I agree, I think it does influence my thoughts on the show a bit.

I echo Karen Olivo's question in that clip about The Palace.

"People work here?"
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

It's sad, but I think I'm more excited about seeing the cast than the actual show itself... kinda like how I was with Shrek.

Why couldn't Norbert Leo Butz stand up straight?

^^ He limped throughout the show, so I think he makes it part of his character. I kinda liked it, it fit for Hanratty.

Oh. I guess. Tom Hanks stood up straight. I'll like it when I see the whole thing...maybe

everytime I hear "I've got a story that's strange but true" I cringe a little bit. I don't know what it is, but...
