Cats - Lynne Unhappy with Hiring

In case any one was interested.

https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/CATS-Choreographer-Gillian-Lynne-Very-Angry-Over-Blankenbuehler-Hiring-20160608

Personally, prior to Blankenbuehler's announcement, I thought Bergasse would have been a great option. Say what you want about the choreography, but one thing I really enjoyed was the great technique that was highlighted by the moves. I'm not sure if I have seen that in Blakenbuehler's work, because most of it seems to be grounded in hip hop (and I honestly can't remember every show that I have seen of his). Of course, I haven't seen Bandstand to see what he did with that show.

Still, I'm interested to see what Andy does and maybe see a new side of his choreographing.

i cant even with this artcle. my favorite two parts:

"She tells The Stage that she has spoken with the Broadway cast and expressed her concerns that they will not be properly taught how to move like a feline."

"Lynne, who also choreographed Lloyd Webber's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, tells The Stage that she is "very angry" over the decision, adding "It makes me feel like I'd like to murder."

does she really want to murder someone over this decision? really????

....isn't the purpose of a revival to change things up and take the content in a new direction?

#4

Cats - Lynne Unhappy with Hiring

If you don't think she "wants" to murder someone over this you don't know her.

I think she has a point, CATS won't be CATS without her.

And it did almost run forever.

Cats will still be Cats without her.

Her choreography isn't nearly as iconic as Fosse or Robbins and many of their shows have had very successful revivals.

....but the world goes 'round

If anything this makes me want to see it more. I mean I already love Cats (see guilty pleasure thread) but I'm curious to see how it will look with different choreography. I mean if I wanted to see the old choreography I'd just watch the movie.

I disagree she is a large reason why the show worked and became a success. Also, isnt he just reworking her choreography instead of a whole new take? Thats a bit of a slap in the face

Such a nice how do you do for Ms. Lynne.

Yep. We're seeing it as it happens.

"Cats" will be "Cats"--with different choreography. The original exists on DVD, if it's her legacy she's concerned about. "Cats" is being revived--which normally means restaged, re-conceived, and re-examined.

Unless she has special protections built into her contract to make it impossible for major productions to be staged without her choreography, "Cats" (like everything else) is produce-able without her consent or participation. Presumably the costumes, set, lighting and orchestrations will be different as well. Are those original artists having a tantrum in the press?

And "murder"? Have some perspective. And some class.

Haha. She needs to calm down with her dramatics. Why shouldn't they change the choreography of a 35 year old show? Almost every revival restages the show. The show needs a new air anyway. It's very dated,

If you keep the same creative team of a production, it's a remounting—not a revival. I'm surprised Lynne actually believes she rightfully belongs with this team.

Since the entire original creative team was asked back except for her I think she has a right to be miffed. Especially since Blankenbuehler is only adapting her choreography. This is just more Webber backstabbing.

okay THAT makes it a little strange. Otherwise I would agree with what everybody else said. It's a revival. It's meant to be looked at with new eyes and staged as if it were a new production. Deal with it.

Sounds like someone is bitter that she was not hired back. Which is understandable, but she would have been better off taking the high road. She may be right that Andy is not the best choice to adapt her choreography. But if that is the case, the work will speak for itself.

I am looking forward to seeing what Andy does with Cats. I gotta believe that he can do "feline." Also, I think it was a smart move to hire him, as that increases the chances that the "crazed Hamilfans" (and I include myself in that category) go see the show.

^That's part of the problem though. Webber and company are so obviously attempting to get the attention of the "crazed Hamilfans" by writing a rap number into the show and hiring Blankenbuehler that I would hope the majority of Hamilton fans and audiences would be able to see the blatant desperation and not buy into what is likely to be a tragic and ill conceived revival. It's the kind of revival that's mounted for all of the wrong reasons.

Didn't the rap number precede Hamilton?

By about 6 or 7 weeks, yes. Cats began previews at the Palladium on December 6th, 2014 and Hamilton began previews Off-Broadway on January 20th, 2015, but I'm talking about why that revival is transferring now and why they've chosen Blankenbuehler of all people to replace Lynne. It just seems as though they are attempting to cash in on the current craze and while that may be good business I'd argue the opposite for artistic merit. The ethical aspect of hiring Blankenbuehler over Lynne seems suspect too and as I said before I think she has a right to be upset.

Reality check: Gillian Lynne is 90 years old. She was not gonna be hired.

Except in some cocooned non-profit situation, we need to get over the idea that revivals are about faithfully reproducing the original. Revivalists have one goal: selling tickets. Theatre is ephemeral, and so is the work one does in the theatre, no matter how hard one fights for a different reality. An artist who wants their work to live on indefinitely needs to find a different medium.

She has the right to be upset; she has no right to publicly come out and say she's so mad she could murder. As already stated, her choreography is not nearly as iconic as some of the greats before her and many of those shows have had incredible success coming back as revivals. The artform would be dead if everything kept coming back exactly the same without any changes or improvements.

It's also super disrespectful to Blankenbuehler. Yes, his current show is primarily a hip hop dance show. He has, however, worked on many shows that include a variety of kinds of dancing. I think he's an excellent choice for the Cats.

I suspect her anger lies in the fact that this IS a recreation production.

It features the original creative team recreating the original staging, except that Blankenbuehler will be 'rethinking' her work. I also suspect her anger may have to do with how she was treated and told about the decision the producers made to bring in someone else to rework her choreography.

This has nothing to do with the fact that she herself is (a miraculous 90). I'm sure there have been many assistants and associates over the years who have re-created her work.

Cats - Lynne Unhappy with Hiring

I saw the original production five times. Although the cat-like movement was entertaining, it was NOT distinctive enough to deserve the protections given to the choreographers like Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Agnes De MIlle, and Michael Bennett.

There was nothing much more to it than holding your hands up near your nose and twitching and then stretching your back and rubbing against things.

#23

Cats - Lynne Unhappy with Hiring

I've never been an enormous fan of Ms. Lynne's choreography for CATS, but I'm not sure I can agree that it isn't distinct. I think perhaps the reason that the producers want to rework the dance for CATS is because her work IS so distinct -- its also very of its time; and looks, now, more 1980s jazz-modern than contemporary feline.

I do wish the producers had taken the opportunity to completely rethink the entire show and give us a completely new vision of CATS with a complete brand new creative team. The fact that this is essentially a recreation production may fuel nostalgia for those who saw it originally, but its not likely to win over those who are now rather embarrassed by the sensation it caused when it first opened...

#24

Cats - Lynne Unhappy with Hiring

She's upset that the production is recreating her choreography without her involvement. Blankenbuehler was not hired to restage the choreography, he was hired to recreate her work. I think her point is why not just have her do it in the first place. The original team, minus her, has all been brought back- this is not, under any circumstances, a new production.

Lol why is Hamilton brought into every single thread. The rap number was in the show before Hamilton was even off Broadway. Andy is a talented tony award winning chorographer who has been nominated 4 times. I highly doubt most of the Hamilton crazed people care if a musical has the same choreographer as Hamilton.

On the other hand if the entire team has been brought back except for her then she does have a right to be angry but her wording is a bit dramatic. And she is 90 years old which is a probably a reason she wasn't brought back.
