What did the house of the Winter Garden Theatre look like during Cats? I have not been able to find any good pictures of what the house looked like. I would love to be able to compare the theatre then to what it looks like now

The stage looked like a junkyard and I believe the interior of the theater may have been painted black.

Yes, it was, and the ceiling of the theatre was painted to look like the night sky.

Am I misremembering, or wasn't the "junk" oversized, as if from a cat's perspective? Didn't Grizzabella rise to the topside (or whatever they called it) on a giant tire?

My understanding is that they pop topped the roof of the theater for the tire to go up into. Read it in a book.

I believe Gerald Schoenfeld mentioned that in his memoir. Maybe that's the book of which you're thinking.

It would be cool to see some pictures of the Winter Garden with the house lights on. But I guess that the whole darkness of the set/design added to the mistique of it

I'm excited too! If you want to get some idea, search for the recent production at the London Palladium to get an idea of what this production may look like.

a few posts up...Thanks Brody! I think I wasn't even 8 years old and thought I was in the most fantastic place on Earth!! Seeing "Cats" at such a young age really influenced my whole sense of being and doing and happiness and love. I hope it will be as memorable this year, if not to me now, than to a new 8 year old!

I do remember they let the audience onstage during intermission to look at the set. I did standing room so it was nice to get a closer look.

That's right! That's right! Seeing Old Deuteronomy at intermission! I'm 8 years old again!
