Having never seen it before, I saw West Side Story last night -- with the understudies, to my surprise.
Maria (I think it was Haley Carlucci, as someone else said in this message board) was charming and sweet. She seemed VERY young and innocent. Her singing is operatic and especially beautiful in the upper range. And even though I was upset to miss seeing the lead Maria, who has gotten such wonderful write-ups, I enjoyed this young actress very, very much.
However, the Tony stand-in, Hydzik, was bad. I read on this board how someone liked him, but I can't see how. Maybe they just really don't like the actor who has the lead. I've never heard of Hydzik, but felt he gave a cheese-ball performance, more Donnie Osmond than Broadway. During his solos, he would look out into to audience wistfully and do this winking, self-indulgent shrug. SO CHEESEY! And his voice didn't mesh with Maria's at all. His is all corn-ball and schmaltzy. Worse still, he can't hit the low notes during the balcony scene. LAME. Two strangers on my row felt the same way, one even said he reminded her of a David Hasselhoff, Jr. I also agree that his scene in Docs, when he gets the news that Maria's been shot, was devoid of emotion on his part, almost weirdly so.
I was really disappointed. I bought my tickets before previews began and I wanted to get good seats early in the run. I guess I wouldn't have minded if I had liked the understudies, but I really felt cheated to have both leads out and have a sub-par Tony eight weeks into the run.

I stand by my statement.
If you think Hugh Jackman or Harvey Feirstein felt 100% every single night, you're dreaming.
If you are too sick to get to the stage, well...
But other commiments????? personal days?????
Your commitment is to your show, first and foremost!
You Do Not take off to prepare for a TV show or a holiday dinner.
Sorry folks, that's how I feel.

Posted: 4/15/09 at 9:17pmHoliday dinners? Not that I know any of the performers personally, but Easter is pretty much the grand-daddy of the Church calendar. Perhaps they were actually observing the holiday and had religious commitments. I doubt anyone would miss a show so that they could carve their ham.

Won lotto tonight. FINALLY!
Scaglione was out and Carlucci was on. She was fantastic in every way. Beautiful, natural, amazing voice, etc.
Carlucci and Olivo stole the show for me. I was not impressed at all by Matt's performance, and most of the Jets I felt were lackluster. They're not scary or tough enough. Although, I do think Holbrook was great.
Act I ended and I was enjoying it, but not as much as I thought I would or I had hoped I would. Act II made me love the show. It's so powerful (especially "Somewhere"), and as I said before it runs completely on Anita and Maria (and Doc!). I was speechless and can't stop thinking about it. In the Featured Actress category, Karen is in the lead in my book after seeing the ladies 9to5 and BE.
Anyway, back on topic.
Carlucci was amazing and I completely forgot about wanting to see Scaglione. (Though, now I remembered and may have to go back...hopefully when Matt is out).
Matt didn't sound bad, so he must be feeling better, but he didn't do it for me. Great voice, but not right for the part.

Posted: 4/16/09 at 9:24pmI saw the matinee (SRO) and thought that Carlucci was wonderful, as was the rest of the cast (including Cavenaugh). My view was perfect- the best I've ever had from SRO. My only problem with the show was the underamplification.

I thought there was something "off" about Matt Cavenaugh and Josefina Scaglione, who were back on tonight, Thursday, April 16, 2009. This is my second visit to WEST SIDE STORY.
JS coughed quite a bit onstage, and sounded weaker compared to the first time I saw the show.
MC's upper register was fine but his middle and lower register notes seemed wobbly and not exactly on pitch.
I feel bad for them. It's a bitch to sing when you're sick, especially those quasi-operatic songs from WSS. They still got a standing ovation and the applause was loudest for Karen Olivo.

Just like any other job...they are ALLOWED to take time off. It's a JOB. Early in the run or not. Just because it's early in the run doesn't preclude them from getting sick, having issues, needing a mental health day, OR from observing a religious holiday: even if it IS to only carve a ham with their families.
If the producers don't have a problem with thier absence, how is it any of our business?
