I've only seen Betsy Wolfe live, out of those performers (in Tales of the City), but she seems like a perfect Beth to me, and not so much a Mary as some suggest. Hrmm.
I did kinda have the thought that they seemed to be casting a bit strange--not super fresh young, but not the more mature cast that I think does work better in the revised production. Any word on WHAT version will be done? I'd assume the most recent--but being an Encores staging, they could try to do the original...

Posted: 10/12/11 at 9:34amStanley has ZERO sex appeal. She's totally wrong for Gussie. The rest of the cast seems pretty spot on though. To the people who think otherwise, I think Celia is definitely more of a Mary than a Beth. She can definitely pull of both the quirkiness and vulnerability that she needs.

Posted: 10/12/11 at 12:16pmI think Elizabeth Stanley is an interesting choice...I thought she was good in Company and awful in Cry-Baby, but I really liked her in the Transport Group's Hello Again last year.

Stanley has "zero sex appeal"? Did you see HELLO, AGAIN? Or COMPANY?
Or, more importantly- are you blind?
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Posted: 10/13/11 at 1:28amGoing back to what I said earlier, having seen Stanley in Jekyll, I can attest that she is not only not boring onstage, but can exude tremendous sex appeal. Are we even talking about the same person here? I know she's been miscast before (ie, in Cry Baby), but I think she's an amazing performer.

Seems like Lapine went for fresh takes on these roles, Kritzer was the obvious choice but her impressive turn in SONDHEIM.. might have worked against her. I think Ceils will be terrific.
I was not a fan of Stanley till HELLO AGAIN, in which she was sexy like she's never been before.
Wolfe has been wonderful in the various roles I've seen her.

Well actually I DIDN'T see Hello, Again. But I thought she had absolutely no sex appeal in Company, Xanadu, or Million Dollar Quartet, and she lacked all forms of charm in Cry-Baby. She's high on my list of overrated performers.

Bjh, if it's any comfort, I was no fan of Stanley's in Xanadu, Company, or (especially) Cry-Baby (I did enjoy her more than anything else about MDQ, but that's faint praise). BUT I thought she was mesmerizing in Hello Again. It was a crazy moment of, "Hold the phone. SHE can do THAT?!" It was one of those moments where I felt like I finally understood why someone keeps getting cast in things.
I'm still waiting for myself to have that moment with Sutton Foster (I know, I know. Everyone loves her). Regardless, for some reason I felt like as a complete and total stranger I would suggest there's still reason to believe she could be great!
Colin Donnell I'm very excited about. Can't wait to hear who's going to be Charlie!
