Changes to "Working"
Changes to "Working"#1
Posted: 1/15/11 at 4:21pmIs the MTI version of "Working" the original version, or has it implemented changes from the later revisions? What changes were made over time to the show to reflect later workforce changes- were songs cut, added, jobs eliminated or introduced?

The licensed version has changes implemented about 10 years ago. Here's what I recall:
CUTS: The Newsboy song is cut. The merchant seaman's monologue is cut.
Added songs: New song {"I'm Just Movin'")for grocery checker. "Traffic Jam" (an old James Taylor song) added for ensemble - follows the steelworker's monologue after the opening number.
Added monologues: Monologue for a wealthy lady who does volunteer work for charity is inter-cut with the prostitute's monologue. After the opening of Act 2, there is a new sequence with three tele-marketers.
Of course, there is a NEWER version (not yet available) with new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, among other changes.

Posted: 1/16/11 at 4:02pmI wish they would license the new version. It's an interesting concept- a "documentary musical" that gets rewritten every ten years to keep up with the times.

Posted: 1/16/11 at 11:06pmI think the LA Theatre Works cast recording follows the currently licensed version, but I'm not entirely sure.
