Channel 4 top 100 musicals

Posted: 12/31/09 at 5:12pm

I just watched some of this then found the full list online. What a load of rubbish!
Miss Saigon is at 99 and there is an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at number 13! I expected there to be a slant to movie musicals but even with the movie Sweeney Todd is number 80.
It is full of the usual errors including calling the original versions of The Producers and Hairspray musicals (though Hairspray didn't even make the top 100.

Anyone else see it?

Is this an updated list (and programme) or the one from possibly 5 years ago or there abouts. It's been repeated quite often if it's the one I'm thinking of. Mrs Mead presented it as I recall :)

Not sure. The website refers to Sweeney Todd as a film so I guess it is 2 years or less. It is Mrs Mead (had to think about who you meant there!)

Now looked at the whole list at home.

I can see why Grease got the nod as the top musical, because Grease was such a big hit in the theatre and silver screen, so reached out to people who go to one or the other genre's.

The list does not contain the biggest musical in the whole world 'Phantom of the Opera' nor is Mama Mia on the list. To have Cry Baby ranked above Hairspray is plain crazy.

I would say this is biased more to the cinema by a long chalk.

Phantom of the Opera was number 20. It is definitely skewed towards films. I hadn't noticed Mamma Mia's absense but wow! The list was made before the movie but even then it was huge. Hairspray is absent too and probably a lot of deserving shows. Rent is one I noticed to be absent.

I had a slight technical hitch when reviewing this list, it twice skipped from 19 to 21!!!!

I am sure if a survey was carried out just on avid theatre goers then the list would look a lot different, for instance Billy Elliot would be on there and be very high up.

lol :)

From looking at other website I see the show I'm talking about was repeated on More4 on 31st December.

If I remember rightly they had all the options listed on a website and people just selected which shows they wanted to vote for. Which explains how things like Buffy and the film 8 Mile ended up in the mix.

I do know where you are coming from with the criticisms of the list, however 'Once More with Feeling' the musical episode of Buffy, is amazing and in my opinion very worthy of a place high up on that list.

Saigon should have been a lot higher... and phantom... les mis. The thing is it says musical simply... not stage or screen musicals. It's all bull **** anyway as was a public vote and most of the general public hadn't heard of hairspray as it was compiled about 5 years ago now.
