I am planning a trip out to NYC sometime in the near future and I am just wondering if anyone has any nice, cheap places to stay that are located somewhat close to the Theater District. I stayed at the BW President last time which was so great! But I would like to find someplace new in case that hotel doesn't work out for some reason. Thank you so much for your time!
When I used to come and need hotels, I once found a deal for the Milford Plaza (on 45th and 8th) for $85 a night, and it wasn't too bad of a place. Not the nicest I've stayed in, but not the worst either. If you're willing to walk a few blocks, there's the Carlton on 29th and Madison. I stayed there for Thanksgiving last year for about $130 a night, which was CHEAP for Thanksgiving...I think it's because they were in a renovation process, but still, they're pretty cheap now and I was expecting a real disgusting hotel for that cheap on Thanksgiving, but it was gorgeous! I had a huuuuge single room with a luxurious double bed, a HUMONGOUS bathroom, etc. One place I stayed in on the UWS, you walked into the bathroom and it was literally the shower, the sink practically combined, and the toilet was so close to the sink you could brush your teeth while doing your business. So I had a very nice stay in the Carlton.
If you want more of a Hostel deal, the Big Apple Hostel on 45th is nice, as far as hostels go. It's not sketchy, like, oh, the Jazz on the Park hostel is up on 106th. Check out hotels.com - I've gotten my best deals through them.
The Skyline on 10th is a great value, large rooms for a good price. It's very convenient to the theatres and the neighborhood is great. A part of Hell's Kitchen that is full of wonderful, local restaurants, delis and pubs.
The Edison is a great hotel if you don't mind teeny rooms. It's right at 47th and Broadway, literally two steps out of Times Square
Am I the only one who enjoys the cheapness of a hostel? Sure, the bunkbeds are creaky, the showers mucky and you're constantly awakened by the snoring neighbours in your room....but for $30/night in NYC, it's a no-brainer.
(Being a student means you gotta get by however you can.)
(Best hostel is easily Times Square Bed & Rooms - it's clean as can be, and feels like you're staying over at a friend's loft. The Big Apple Hostel was a little too grimy for me.)
I stayed at the Super 8 Times Square. Fab location (46th St. between 5th and 6th Aves.) and cheap! I got it for $125 for 2 DB and apparently thats as expensive as it'll ever get. AND it includes free continental buffet breakfast and free internet/printer (v. useful for researching where you want to go and what shows you want to see!).

I have grown to like Radio City Apts on 49th st. They have a special on now if u use Amex & pay the whole stay@ check in the rate is 95.00 a night til sept. The studios have fridge, microwave coffemaker utensils many have gas stoves. One bed avil @ sli higher rate. Great $ & location. Also the B'wat Inn Updated On: 7/31/04 at 10:54 AM
I've had wonderful luck using priceline.com. For search criteria, I've chosen three- or four-star hotels, location of midtown West and Central Park South, and always get the Hilton on 6th Ave., or the Sheraton Towers on 7th Ave., for about $100-120, depending on time of year. That's for a king-size room - extremely clean and comfortable. I've gotten these consistent results about 15-20 times consecutively. Tip: Don't choose a location of midtown East - a mistake on my part several times, where I've only gotten true dumpy hotels.
I recently stayed at the Amsterdam Court Hotel (on 50th) right next to The Palm and across the way from where Wicked is playing.
The rooms were small but clean and the beds very comfortable. Best part: all the broadway stars go to The Palm after their shows. It will cost you as much as the hotel room to eat there....but worth the eye candy!
If you don't have to get a particular hotel, I've had success with Priceline. You can use www.biddingfortravel.com to gauge the demand for the rooms during the time that you are planning your trip. You can also see what bids have been accepted by Priceline from other users. I used this method to get a room at the Marriott Marquis for this weekend for $110. The normal rate was $219 on the Marriott site. Good luck on your plans!

I have stayed at the Super 8 many times Again this next week. But the price is a little more now. But still great location and great breakfast bar
The last time we were in New York, my family and I stayed at the Comfort Inn Midtown. It's only a block or two from Times Square, the rooms are very clean (but on the small side), and they have a continental breakfast. Nothing ritzy, but I'll take clean and quiet over fancy any day. We were lucky enough to get a room that wasn't facing the street, so our room was blissfully quiet. I can't remember what we paid for our stay (and it was in 2000, so I'm sure the rates have gone up a little) but I would absolutely recommend it.
Jarico and I liked the Best Western President on 48th at 8th. We got it for $113.
I'd go for the priceline option -- use the www.biddingfortravel.com to get an idea of the hotels offered at the various ratings and neighborhoods -- if you know you are coming with no chance of cancelling, you will always do better here by getting higher quality/national chain at prices some of these other lower quality hotels offer.
