Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

Which style do you prefer her singing? I just finished watching "Candide" and she was simply breathtaking in Glitter and be Gay. I adore her "Let Yourself Go" album, but I know a lot of people who hate her singing that type of music. Which do you prefer?

I think she sounds beautiful on "Let Yourself Go", but she was born to sing opera. I think she sounds more natural legit.

Her belt is servicable, but when she uses her soprano (whether on classic showtunes or opera) she really shines.

Opera and belt aside, what I think Kristen does best is mixing the two. What wows me a lot of the time if when she's singing those higher Ds and Es but she is neither completely in head voice nor completely in head voice. I don't think I've ever heard anyone else do it as well as she does

So I don't think I could decide between her opera and jazz if I was threatened with death. I like both, and that's one of the great things about her, isn't it? Her versatility.

I agree. I think the thing that makes Cheno so amazing is her versatility. She can sing the hell out of anything. (I mean that in a good way, of course!!)

YAY for OCU grads!

I LOVE Kristin in "Candide." She really was born to sing opera. However, she is an incredibly versatile vocalist who can sing almost anything. I mean...she's not Audra, but she's incredible.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

Shall I sing a melody
of birds on the wing?
Shall I sing
of love and spring
or shall I sing of swing?

YEAH, SWING! OH, SWING!

Should I dance the polka
Or a stately court gavotte?
Or should I do
A Suzi-Q
And make it
Good and HOT!

SOO HOT! TOO HOT!

Should I do
what mother tells me to
and be a slightly dull but model
little daughter?
Or should I merge
with this terrific urge
to...
GET RIGHT OUT AN' STRUT MY STUFF!
Not too gay BUT GAY ENOUGH!

YEAH MAN! WOO HOO!

Teacher says I shouldn't sing
Those Tin-Pan Alley songs
I should sing
of love and spring
Like
"Lo, Hear the gen-tle La-a-a-arrk!
Lo, hear the gentle la-a-a-arrk!"

But I will not sing
of love and spring!
For when I sing
I wanna sing
I gotta sing
OF SWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!

To look at us you'd never think the two of us were twins
In fact It's quite ridiculously odd!
But speaking pedagicigally, if not so biologically
We're really just like two peas in a pod!

We both love to swim and we both like to dance
We both could fall in love with Gable
If we had the chance!
Our tastes are just the same except for just one thing
I like opera!
I like swing!

Me too. I'm looking forward to her collaboration with Luda.

I like her best when she's not trying to do one "Type" of music genre.
I would love it if she did a small venue where it's just her and a piano.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

the reason i love her so much is because of her opera voice..she was trained in opera and i think that's what helps to make her such a good singer/performer. however, i do enjoy "let yourself go" very much, but i'm not a big fan of her jesus/country "as i am" cd.

Chenoweth would have a very limited career with opera. She was smart not to go down that road and she should stay far away from it IMO.

I think she does both masterfully. I couldn't choose.

I could listen to her sing classical/opera all day every day. I have Let Yourself Go and listened to it exactly once. Not so into her voice when it comes to that genre of music.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

There's something very grating about the attitude - enforced by some - that Audra McDonald and Kristin Chenoweth should be given massive brownie points becaus they both are willing to "lower" themselves to do mere theater.

Why, they could be "real" artists and do opera! As if opera were somehow more important. It isn't more important. It's merely different.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

Although I haven't picked up her latest, I do enjoy "Let Yourself Go". I hadn't listened to her "classical" voice before, but it just sounds so much more natural to her, and her nasal voice sort of disappears. And it's amazing how she can hit those insanely stratospheric notes with such ease. The music on "Let Yourself Go" are very soothing just because they're within jazz itself, but her voice just SHINES when she sings classically.

Of course, when she's not, she has this character voice which makes her all the more versatile.
This is my signature.

TennesseeTwang - we're not saying at all that opera is above the level of jazz or anything else. i just think that classical training has helped kristin and others be more versatile performers. they're not stooping to the level of broadway..they're using what they've learned and applying it to broadway to do what they want and make them better performers.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

I know that I am going to get pelted for this but I'm not particularly fond of her voice. It doesn't make my ears bleed or anything like Kerry Butler's but if I had to pick 5 female vocals to hear for the rest of my life hers wouldn't be one of them.

Come down from that tree, WonderBoy.

Everyone is afforded an opinion.

I, personally, love classical voices on Broadway. It's like DemonBarberofBroadway said: They are not "stooping," they are applying their training to enhance their performance skills. Now...do I think it takes more skill to sing properly in the classical style? YES! YES! YES! That is not to discount jazz music, but, vocally, classical music is much harder to sing.

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

This woman could sing me the phone book and I would not give a damn because her voice is so gorgeous.
Her legit/soprano is one of the best I've heard and seems to float on air with ease. Her Glitter and Be Gay kind of makes me pee just a little bit.
Still, her belt never fails to impress me- Taylor, the Latte Boy and The Girl 14G are two of my favorites.
And P.S. -I have newfound appreciation for this girl simply because most of the Glinda replacements and understudies I have seen choose to mix the last note of Popular causing it to be highly anti-climactic. I miss the Cheno belt!

re: Chenoweth-Jazz or Opera?

Actually, I don't disagree with anything anyone has said, especially about the precision and rigorous training needed to sing classical music. And I'm aware of the fact that even many Broadway performers who don't sound operatic when thy sing, have had classical training.

My point is that while nobody on this thread may have implied that theater is a lesser art form, I have indeed encountered those who feel that way. And it burns my biscuits.

It's snobbery pure and simple.

Incidentally, while few would disagree that classical singing is more difficult to do properly than jazz, you're unlikely to find as many who are willing to say that classical instrument performance is more difficult than Jazz.

No less an authority than Wynton Marsalis who has won Grammys in both disciplines, called such an assertion, bunk.

The great Billy Taylor who is both a top-flight musician and music historian, calls Jazz American classical music and he makes a very convincing case that jazz and classical music are very similar in their complexity.

Forgive the rant, but Americans need to get over the notion that all culture comes from Europe. Even most Europeans no longer believe that. And there are also probably more jazz fans in Europe than the U.S.

Chill, Twang. Tell all that to the people you disagree with, I'm sure it'll have a bigger impact than telling it to people who you don't disagree with.
