After reading about Meryl signing on for Donna, wouldn't it be awesome if her old friend Cher played Tanya? Think of it... Tanya's song (Does Your Mother Know) is in a lower range, the charactor is made fun of for all her plastic surgery, she has a young guy fall for her and has a love for funky fashion! Anyone else agree?
...did you really need to start a new thread for this?
Is the movie a sequel to the musical? These women are all 15 years too old!
Add a "Grand" to the title, and you're all set!
I like it.
Grandmamma Mia!!!

Cher's appearance scares me---she's starting to look like Michael Jackson.
Or... Old Rosie!
Too bad Nancy Walker is no longer with us.
I still think Streep should play Tanya, and Joan Cusack should play rose.
Film acting requires facial expressions, something Cher is no longer capable of.
I could definitely see Streep paired with Cher (though they would have to losen some of the stiching on her face) and someone like Bette Midler - though part of the problem is that Streep and company really are too old.
As much as I loved the idea of Olivia Newton John - she's too old too - not only on paper but from a film marketing standpoint.
The studio is clearly banking on Streep's name but once you pair her with two other ladies of a similar "age" - you (again from a movieland perspective) dealing with a movie that has such an old target audience, you might as well do a straight-to-retirement-village release.
I think somebody like Michelle Pfeiffer would really have made more sense.
I don't these women look too old at all. They really look too young to be grandmothers and look more like mothers. I'm sure they can easily play younger. Plus does anyone really care about their age?
Yes, MTVMAN - the studio heads that have to make money on the movie care about their ages.
Streep, regardless of how good she looks, is about 10 years older than most of the actresses who have played the role on Broadway and tour.

How old is Carolee Carmello vs. Meryl?
As much as I LOVE Meryl, isn't she kinda too good for this project? She won't even have to dip into her sea of talents, but maybe that's what she wants, just to have fun and really SING and DANCE. I honestly just thought it sounded like the perfect project for MADONNA, and she is so inspired by ABBA as of late too.
Makes you wonder who the role was offered to and who turned it down or pursued it and why. Does this kind of movie make more money with MADONNA or MERYL above the title?
Well one thing we can be sure of now is that MAMMA MIA! will be Oscar-nominated!
I cannot imagine Madonna being offered a role before Meryl Streep. And I can't imagine her turning down such a role...
Bad actress or not, Madonna may have been fun in the role - she is a better age for the part - but I think it was ruled that the speculation that she was "offered" the part was some made up rumour from a Madonna fan site.
I think there is about a 13 year age difference between Streep and Carmello.

Goldie Hawn as Tanya? I think Godie Hawn as Tanya. I've thought that for a while, but then again thats mostly because the first time i saw mamma mia i saw the movie cover for the first wives club shortly after and thought "wow, they look like the mamma mia ladies". Also, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn seem to like working with eachother, Goldie Hawn can sing, its a good match from my perspective.
Only if Diane Keaton was younger and had amazing pipes... It could have been an amazing First Wives Club reunion.
Oh Diane Keaton definitely could sing it. She definitely had a fab voice when she was younger; if you have the original cast recording of HAIR - she sings the solo in WALKING IN SPACE.

Liza Minnelli as one of the friends would be great. She was absolutely hysterical in her Arrested Development episodes.
and the first wives club. She sang in that, and quite well. But point in fact: Tanya should be Goldie Hawn because Goldie Hawn is Tanya.
I also think Jamie Lee Curtis would be a lot of fun as Tanya.

I like Jamie Lee Curtis, but not as Tanya.
Madonna could have been Donna and if Bette Middler was Tanya and Rosie O Donnel as Rosie and I would die happy.

Well, given that I HATE this show (and the movie it's based on BUENA SERA MRS. CAMPBELL) the one and ONLY way they could have ever gotten me to see this tripe on screen would have bee to cast Streep -- so I guess I'll have to see it some point.
As far as ages are concerned -- and I may be wrong here since I willed myself to go temporarily blind and deaf when I was sitting through it -- I thought that the only real requirement was that the mother be convincingly of an age where she could realistically have a 20-ish daughter. Since Streep has 4 children ranging in age from 16 to the mid-20s, I'm not sure I see what the problem is.
I was thinking of Goldie Hawn myself.
