A while ago I heard something about this, or this possibility. Does anybody remember, or know if it's still being talked about ... is it still of interest as a televison remake??

Dead.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 11:38pmI can't believe Glenn Close turned this down! She would have been great! But I guess she still thinks she's young enough to play Nurse Nellie!

Cher is no longer in the running. Project seems to be in limbo. Maybe after the planned revival...

You miss Cher? How the hell can you miss her-- she won't go away!
She's been on tour, non-stop for close to 4 years. She has played here in Chicago 8 times, each one was "absolutely positively THE LAST TIME" and was billed as a farewell tour.
Personally if I had paid to see her her "last concert" in 2003, I'd have sued her silly.
And oh yeah, once she "retires" I'd expect she'd be back for a "comeback tour" about 15 minutes later.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 8:41amGolie Hawn doesn't have the "elegance" to play Mame. I vote for either Dixie Carter, Diana Rigg or Joan Collins.

Are any of you remotely aware that MAME is in he LATE 20's when she gets Patrick and in her mid 40's in the final scene???
Catherine Zeta Jones is PERFECT for this!

Carter is 66, Rigg is 67 and Collins is 72 (a decade older than an over-the-hill, miscast Ball was in the film) -- all are WAY too old for the role. Remember this is supposed to be Patrick's aunt, not his great grandmother. Heck, if age is totally no object, bring back Lansbury and have her do it as she should have been able to in the first place 30+ years ago (just joking).
Incidentally, Russell was 45 and Lansbury was 41 when they first did the role.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 9:57amIs a Broadway revival of Mame still in the works? If so, Karen Ziemba would be PERFECT for the role.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 10:11amHerman still wants one (of course) but Ziemba doesn't have enough of a name to headline a $10 million revival. Best she could do would be to standby. Talk has swirled around Christine Baranski and Christine Ebersole for both Vera and Mame for a couple of years (though I believe Baranski has no interest in Vera). Baranski I believe wants to do it if she can free her schedule (she seems to always be involved in some short-lived sitcom).

Posted: 9/2/05 at 10:23amThe one person I can think of who is ideal for MAME, would be a box office draw and might actually be convinced to play it is ANNETTE BENING.

Posted: 9/2/05 at 10:26amBenning's a GREAT pick. She has all the right qualities and is the right age. And I somehow get a sense that she can sing for some reason (or at least well enough for a film version of the show).

Posted: 9/2/05 at 10:29amWhen Annette Bening was up for an Oscar for BEING JULIA, she did a lot of press junkets and at an Academy screening of the film in Los Angeles, in talking about her career, she said she always wanted to do musical theatre. So I assume she does sing...

WWll...if we could "TURN BACK TIME", we could have convinced someone to go ahead with the project. But maybe right now...Cher is just singing a "SONG FOR THE LONELY". But soon she'll realize it's not about the fame..."IT'S IN HIS KISS!".
oh man. why did i do that?
#22re: Cher in T.V. MAME
Posted: 9/2/05 at 10:37amI agree. I love Annette Bening! I also adore Baranski but I just don't see her as being warm wnough to play Auntie Mame.

I guess the one issue -- and it's hardly an insigificant one -- is that Bening has 4 small children, some of whom are school age in LA. She'd obviously need to relocate the kids (and Beatty?) to New York for a year+ It'd be great if she'd do it, though I'm not sure she'd be willing to go through all that. Doing a film version of it in LA would probably make more sense for her.
What about Judy Davis?

Davis is another top choice.
I always thought Baranski would make a great Vera.
