Posted: 7/23/05 at 4:02pmThe OBC has a more theatrical feel to it. Sounds more like a real show than the concept recording. Both are good though but I prefer the OBC with Judy Kuhn. Love her.

I've not heard the Danish recording, but if it's a choice between the OBC and the Concept, I'd go with the Concept album. The OBC has some great perfomances (esp. Judy Kuhn), but the London recording is absolutely thrilling (everything sounds so BIG...the orchestra, the voices) and Elaine Paige sings the hell out of Florence's songs (the part was written expressly for her).
Completely trivial sidenote: I remember reading an interview with Sarah Michelle Gellar back when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was still on the air, and the interviewer asked her for her five "Desert Island Discs"; she included the OBC recording of Chess on her list (not quite sure why I found that interesting, but I did).

I 2nd that Emcee! I want Julia Murney!
I think I've decided though. I'm gonna go find the OBC recording. The London sounds so synthesized.
How are the arrangements on the OBC? I really loved how what I've heard from the benefit really brought out the rock in the score. Julia's "Nobody's Side." Thrilling.

I am always the odd one out whenever this question comes out. I detest the original concept because of Elaine Paige's performance. Screech, Shout, Screech, Shout. It's a wonder one man would want her Florence, let alone two. shudder. My votes goes for the OBC. You get a more desirable Florence and no other Anatoly can hold a candle to the divine David Carroll, may he and his beautiful voice R.I.P.

I have listen to London, broadway, Danish, Swedish and concert recording.
Danish complete cast recording is difficult to find. There is a new version which lack 4 tracks.
If you have only two choice, then London. The Chess theme is good enough to superior to Broadway. And Tommy Korberg's Anatoly is the ultimate one.

Posted: 7/23/05 at 5:56pmI prefer the performances on the OBC overall, though the version of One Night in Bangkok you hear on the radio all the time is from the concept album, so it tends to ring truer to me, perhaps because repetition has made it so familiar. In addition, the Arbiter song at the beginning ("from square one I'll be watching all 64...") is not on the OBC and I love it. I prefer David Caroll's Anatoly -- his "Anthem" is just about perfection. Hard choice, I know.

Posted: 7/23/05 at 7:34pmIt's all about the OBC..Judy Kuhn is leaps and bounds above that other woman.

Posted: 7/23/05 at 10:40pmThey are so very different that if you like the music you should own both.

Posted: 7/23/05 at 11:10pmI have four versions - London, Broadway, cocnert, Danish. I actually find myself listening to the Danish one most frequently, though it annoys me that the songs are in a weird order -- why is Pity the Child (one of my all time favorite songs) in the first act???
#24re: Chess recording
Posted: 7/24/05 at 11:36amThat is because Chess Danish is following the original London script closely. in original London version, Pity the Child is in the act1. This was changed later in broadway version.
