Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Whether or not Emily is right for the role is kind of irrelevant at this point. She won't be playing it unless Disney is highly forgiving...

That said, I think she's PERFECT.. she's brassy, she can be bitchy (on... stage... of course *wink*), her voice is perfect... she's FUNNY... and... she's GORGEOUS. Let's not all forget about the little transition that takes place, ja? Eartha Kitt is no bombshell... SORRY! (And I really doubt they'll want to use another actress for that part...)

In that case... Chita, Eartha, Patti and Delta would NOT work.

As for Kerry... I heard they were considering turning it into a big dance role, because once she loses her voice, what else can she do? Kerry's not a dancer... that's the only problem I'd forsee with her as Ariel... otherwise, I must agree I think she's a perfect choice.

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

The dance thing is an interesting idea. Hm.

Oh, and for heaven's sake- if the little fankids didn't complain about two thirty-somethings playing high schoolers in Wicked, I don't see what the big deal is this time.

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Am I the only one who doesn't like the idea of Kerry as Ariel? I couldn't stand the recording of her singing "Part of Your World." I could barely get through it.

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Especially since Kerry's a much more convincing 18 year old than either of them.

Interesting points Daisy. I have no concern about Emily playing Ursula AFTER the transformation. My concern lies more in her playing the husky, sultry, witch type character before the transformation. Especially with some of the music that's been written for that character. I guess we'll see. If she's still involved in some way, maybe she'll prove me wrong.

PS-Yes, I was wondering if Emily would still be involved after the little *cough* spat...

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

I seriously doubt she'll be playing Ursula now.. this came straight from the horse's (or, erm... sea wench's, as it were) mouth. Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

I have NO problems picturing her as the husky, sultry witch type (and her voice fits that "type" PERFECTLY... it *is* husky and sultry...). LOL! I mean, they'd obviously "ugly" her up... the only thing I could see posing as a problem is that she's too beautiful, but that's what make up is for!

She delivered a kickin' rendition of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" in On the Record. She plays evil well... Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula???? A little too well if you ask me. :)

I haven't heard Kerry's "Part of Your World". Let me go listen...

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

In my view, it makes sense for Ariel to be a new discovery.

I'd love to see Carol Woods devour the role of Ursula, but can someone remind me who sang the role in the film, (probably being dumb here)- she has a hell of a voice!

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Ursula in the movie was Pat Carroll. No picture in IMDB.

And I totally didn't know Tim Curry was in that movie.

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Ursula also needs to have a LOT of range. She goes from female-baritone range right up through high register. Quite demanding.

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

Is Cheyenne the lead in All Shook Up? because if he is then he should not be Prince Eric because he is way to ugly and caveman looking.

"Ursula also needs to have a LOT of range. She goes from female-baritone range right up through high register. Quite demanding."

I seriously don't mean for this to sound condescending... but have you HEARD her sing? She has nearly a 4 octave range... the woman has PIPES and low notes for days!

Emily Skinner wrong for Ursula????

I think an Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan type should play Ursula. This way it fits the cartoon character and it brings a big star to broadway which draws in new crowds.

My picks..

Sharon Wilkins, Mary Bond, or the ultimate Ursula look-alike, Starlett Jones. (Not that she can sing for her life..)

My picks..

Daisy- Don't worry, I was never suggesting that Emily doesn't have that range. I was just making an observation that the role has a range that jumps all over the place.

Edit- I also think that Cheyenne is great for the part of Eric. He's actually the first one I thought of for the part when I heard Eric's music.

My picks..

Patti as Ursula!

Too bad, though, because I doubt she'd come out of semi-retirement for a Disney stage adaptation of a cartoon.

(when I say semi-retirement I'm alluding to the fact that she said in an interview that she likely won't do another Broadway musical and that she just does concerts now)

My picks..

Stephanie- I'll just say I like what I've heard so far. It sounds promising.

I like Kerry's rendition but if I could give her one tip I would tell her not to try so hard to sound cute; she has a naturally cute voice. Let it be more natural.
