Chicago?

My school was trying to secure the rights to Chicago, but instead we now are producing The Pajama Game. When I asked why Chicago fell through, they said that because the show is currently on Broadway, the rights are temporarily locked, but I have surely seen productions of other musicals, Chicago including, that were on Broadway at the time?

Anybody know why Chicago is currently un-licensealbe?

The rights were available in between tours, but I believe a new tour is going out.

All I can say is, Thank God they are restricted. High school Chicagos can be VERY scary.

I thought there was a big thing awhile back about how the Chicago tour was ending?


I know Les Miserables was one of the first ( if not the first) musical to be on Broadway and let out amature rights at the same time. Since then, there have been other shows that have followed.

Rent has amature rights and it is both on Broadway and on tour.

The rules are that you have to be at least fifty miles of any professional production. Eiather tour or Broadway.

I think Chicago might be having even stricter rights after what happend in the Bronx.

The rights to RENT are not available. Not yet, anyway. Just like how THE PRODUCERS and MILLIE are still restricted. MILLIE is slowly going into the community domain. LITTLE WOMEN, on the other hand, is now the most second-nature high school musical choice.

For a while Chicago was being performed by amateurs though. I don't know why they're restricted again, but they have been for at least a year now.

ljay889 I go to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington...we would never bastardize Chicago.

I do agree though, high-schools that touch Chicago should jump back!

I believe ya Alexander! Colleges can definitely do justice to Chicago.

But boy we have all seen some scary high-school Chicago clips over the years.

I still think it has gotten back to its restricted state because of what happend in the Bronx.

For those of you that don't know. A high school in the Bronx put on this show. They didn't and couldn't get the rights because they were too close to the 70 mile limit of the Broadway production. The director clearly missed that and went on anyways. He also took some of the script from the movie and mixed and matched it with the book of the stage version.

He got caught doing this and it went to court. The Wessler's were there. He played the " what about the children" card and was able to do the show.

I think that since then they have went back to being VERY strict about the amature productions of this show.
