Chicago the movie

It's a shame too. He probably would've ended up with an Oscar nomination. Gere was this close (pinching fingers together) to getting one. Scary, isn't it?

Evelyn, I love Gere and Zellweger in the film, but I think that they aren't quite right. I happily say that "They Both Reached For The Gun" is one of my favourite parts of the film, but it really is an ensemble number.
The song suits Gere's voice, and Zellweger hardly opens her mouth...

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:03pmTotally deserved the Oscar. Its a near-flawless film. One of my absolute favorites. Although Geres singing annoyed me, his acting was spot on (same for Renee). Catherine Zeta Jones stole the show, though. She was a perfectly vicious Velma.

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:08pmI loved the movie. I finally got the chance to see this live last year, and thought it was the most boring thing I've yet seen live. It had the same set as the original with the orchestra up above the stage, never a change of costume, and absolutely no change of sets. I would have thought that after the film was so popular, they would have restaged it with sets and made this a real "razzle dazzle." If that is how every production is, I'll stick with the movie. It shows how amazing the talent of Rob Marshall is to be able to take this story and music and make it into such a wonderful film. Come on Mr. Marshall, do some more movie musicals!

Posted: 4/3/05 at 1:47pmI loved the movie the first time I saw it (in a really good movie theatre), but with repeated viewings on TV I've grown a bit bothered by the feeling of cut-cut-cut-oh just hold the darn camera still for ten seconds! That aside, I really enjoyed the performances, even Richard Gere, who turned out better than I expected (although for me Jerry Orbach will always be the Billy Flynn). John C. Reilly was fan-tastic, best Amos ever! I understand why they cut it, but I love CZJ and the Queen singing "Class" on the soundtrack album.

I remember going to see this 4 times when it came out. I just loved everything about it. And believe it or not, I haven't seen it since those 4 times. I own the DVD--just never got around to watching it.
-CJZ was perfect casting.
-Zellweger was a marvel. Her voice, or lack of, was fine in the film. And her acting was perfect for the role. I still believe she should have won the Oscar in '03 rather than Nicole Kidman. Kidman should have won for Moulin Rouge, not The Hours. That way, Halle Berry would NOT have an Oscar--which I'm still in shock about when I think about it.
-Gere had the sleaze-bag part down longgg before Chicago was thrown at him. He was just fine.
-Latifah was made a star with this film. She's now making her way to a comfy spot on the Hollywood A List.
-Reilly was great as Amos. Such a small role in the film, but he shined during "Mister Cellophane."

Have you, by any chance, seen "Far From Heaven"?

Posted: 4/3/05 at 8:57pmHugh Jackman has gone on record saying that he was offered the role of Billy Flynn but turned it down because he thought he was too young. One of his quotes was that he saw a line outside a movie theater and said something to the effect that "I thought I may have made a mistake, but I still think I was and still am too young. Billy has been around the block so you need someone older." But every time I see "Chicago" I cringe at Gere (and I did before I became a huge Hugh fan) and always picture Hugh doing the role - IMO he would have been fabulous.

Yes I did see "Far From Heaven" and I didn't get what all the hoopla over Moore was about. I respect her as an actress and have loved several of her performances in the past, but "Far From Heaven" didn't strike me as the film that would get her the gold.
Renee Zellweger should have 2 Oscars on her mantle today instead of just 1.
