This is why I was glad to see it in SF - There was no way I could afford tickets that high.
And it doesn't matter to new audiences whether it's a carbon copy or not. It was a completely new show to me and I loved it. After reading through all the posts bemoaning the return of this show by those who saw it in the 70's...I'm very glad I never saw it before and am able to enjoy it!

Posted: 10/7/06 at 1:20amI don't disagree with either of your points. I personally think the advent of "premium seating" was a greedy and threatening idea which seems to be developing into something rather frightening. Ticket prices are way too high for a lot of shows, and ther really ought to be other options such as rush and lottery tickets. It is my hope that some of these options will become available as the run continues, because ACL needs the business of the newer generation who might not be able to afford $111. These are the folks who have no experience with the original production, which I agree is near impossible to replicate. Still, they haven't by any means butchered the show and it is material that really does deserve an audience. People need to be aware of the show and, maybe more importantly, the pivotal work of its creator. The comparisons are unavoidable, but I'd say it's better to have stuck close to home than to have tried some sort of big re-invention of the piece ala John Doyle.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 1:42amwell since you put it that way, I suppose that's true! i wouldn't be at all surprised if in a few years most of the house was sold as "premium". so really, considering inflation and all, you'd almost be losing money NOT to buy the $111 seats

Posted: 10/7/06 at 2:09amI saw the original and no matter what I have heard, good or bad, I plan to see the show. I think it is unfair to pass judgement on a show based on what you have heard. In my opinion, you see a show because you are interested in seeing it. And I would suggest to anyone here thinking of seeing it not to take the opinion of someone who says "Just know that what you are seeing is a carbon copy" and THAT person has not even seen the revival?! And even if that person has seen the original, they still can't compare the two! JMO

"And I would suggest to anyone here thinking of seeing it not to take the opinion of someone who says "Just know that what you are seeing is a carbon copy""
But it is a carbon copy, you boob! It's certainly not the original. The only question is how good a copy is it? And frankly, I don't plan to waste my time and money finding out.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 2:25amthere's no need for name-calling, no matter how outdated. and I can attest that uncageg is anything but a boob. you can certainly argue that the revival is a pretty close facsimile of the original staging, but is that such a bad thing? surely there are worse theatrical crimes than trying to reproduce something that had little room for improvement to begin with. i'm not saying it's a perfect show, but how does one improve on Bennett's framework?

Posted: 10/7/06 at 2:58amI am going to save this thread for about ten years so I can just post the entire thing with word "RENT" being substituted for the words "A CHORUS LINE" when the RENT revival opens. Oh, and of course up all the ticket prices by about $500.

A Chorus Line isn't anything like Rent. Line is Straighter!

Posted: 10/7/06 at 11:02amThere are tickets available, but this is definitely a show that people are going to buy tickets for their family and friends for the holidays.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 2:08pmThank you Matt. And you are correct, name calling is uncalled for. I just hope that my point is understood. I don't think you can judge a show until you actually see it. I read posts here and post here because I enjoy (and value) the posts of all of the informed theatre goers here. (In New York and across the country) It is also a joy to read the posts of people who are going to their firts show in New York or who are just excited about what they have just seen. I noticed that Luscious has been on just about every "A Chorus Line" thread posting negative things having not seen the production. I read posts about shows I am about to see in New York and I take them all in. However, they don't affect my decision to see a show I have decided I want to see. After seeing the show, I find that I either agree, disagree, or both about the show. And I will see this show no matter what, because it is a show that is special to me as it it the show that, as a 17 year old, totally cemented my love for the theatre. I saw a tour of the show in the early 90's that I did not care for, but I want to see it again on Broadway. And this production especially.

"Much rather wait and spend my money on Evita than that whinny-actor/actress "god I hope I get it..." melodrama..."
But isn't that the same plotline to EVITA?

Posted: 10/7/06 at 3:10pmI take it you haven't seen the London revival yet, then. Prepare to be underwhelmed by a show that seemed much more substantial back in the 70's.

Now, I could summarize Evita as a godawful exercise in too-high belting and musical turgidness, but that would be rude and kind of an off-topic comparison in a thread that's about ACL's sales.
I'm kind of hoping A Chorus Line does sell out, so I can get standing room tickets.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 4:12pmI am not championing this CHORUS LINE revival because it's anything exceptional. It IS a carbon copy, but that is what makes it so brilliant. It's a glimmer of the past for those that weren't around to see it live. It provides us with a glimpse of what it must have been like 31 years ago. Plus, it contains Bennett's absolutely astounding choreography. I'll take a pedestrian cast anyday, if it means that I will get to revisit this show as it appeared in 1975.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 4:24pmBut the show as it appeared in 1975 didn't feature a "pedestrian cast..."

I am aware. I said "cast aside," meaning the direction and the choreography.
Although this cast in no way delivers as it original company did (and how could they? most of them were all playing themselves), they are not bad and in the end, as some of the critics pointed out, the show outshines its cast anyway.

Posted: 10/7/06 at 4:28pmMay I ask what may be a stupid question? What do you mean by a pedestrian cast? A cast with not a lot of experience?
