Sorry,ljay889. There was a new opening number last night, but I can't remember what it was called. I left for spring break this morning and left my Playbill at my appartment. It was not "Big Spender." It was a pretty short song between Charity and her boyfriend. I didn't care too much for the song. I think they should have left "Big Spender" as the opener.

I was at the Matinee today-- Barry Weissler was there to give a speech before the show. He came out and explained he had just flown in from New York and then he started to talk about when he produced a show called "Busker Alley" and how during the preview tour, Tommy Tune injured himself in a twirl around a street light pole where he came down wrong on his foor and broke a bone. "And now, here in Chicago with Christina Applegate in Sweet Charity, we have a street light on the set..and Christina did the same twirl and came down on the same foot and broke the same bone." And I thought Sweet Merciful Mother of God, if he's comparing this to "Busker Alley" the show is doomed. Interestingly, he made it sound as if Christina is gone for good. I have no idea if that is true, but it sure seemed that way to me from his speech. I'll post a full review tomorrow, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Charlotte in this part. The crowd was surly that Christina was out but gave some love to the Understudy. She apparently hurt herself in the very first scene, which is a short, kind of pointless scene that shows Charity & her boyfriend in the park. Charity sort of swings around a lamp post and the she sits on the edge of the stage, pretending it's the lake. The Boyfriend shoves her off the stage into the Pit and there is a "Splash" sound. Our Usher said Christina was either injured on the Lamp post or when she fell into the pit, but the pain got worse as she went along and couldn't continue. It's ironic as the scene was POINTLESS and really should be cut. The show would work so much better if they started in the Fandango and let Charity have her big entrance there.
Joe, what is the new song before BS?
I hope Christina recovers quickly and is able to make it back in time for the New York opening at least. It's strange that Barry made it sound like she won't be returning; I hope that's not the case. I'm sure Charlotte is great, though.
That's really sad. I hope she get's better soon.
There are always injured stars on tour, and people who know the roles from new york always fly in. That's just HOW things work.

Thanks Joe. So interesting to hear that. I saw Busker Alley (when it was "Buskers")
Darcie wowed me in that, that's for sure.
But I hope Chritina heals and continues on to NY. She is hot, and deserves to have this show.

There wasn't a song in that first scene in the park, just some dialogue. It was really only about 3 or 4 minutes long.
I saw the show on Wednesday night and "You Should See Yourself" was in there as the opening number between Charity and boyfriend who pushes her into the lake and runs off with her purse. The transition between that scene and "Big Spender" was shaky at best. What was the original scene that opened the '66 show? I'm unfamiliar with it.
I seem to recall something similar happening to Sandy Duncan when she and Ruthie Henshall were supposed to come into Chicago a couple years ago. Sandy did not do the tour while someone else playing Roxie, I forget who though, but by the time of her broaday opening was able to perform. I may have gotten some little details wrong though. Sweet Charity is not doomed because Christina did the exact same thing as Tommy Tune, it probably had problems before the injury occured. Now Charity on the other hand does have some problems, but overall audience response has been good and think it will do just fine.
Props to Dylis
She would be an Amazing Charity
I hope Christina Applegate has a speedy recovery. It's a shame when any actor gets injured. I am dying to see her in this role when it hits Broadway!
I wish Christina a speedy recovery. I would love to see Charlotte in the role, though. Riedel is gonna be loving this come Wednesday.
I'm telling you, there's too much wrong with this show. Even Charlotte can't save it.
I'd like to see Mr. R. try to twirl around a street light pole.

All of this talk is making me think I should get a ticket for early in previews rather than right before the opening. It sounds like the damn thing could close before then.
Glebb...
So would you suggest I return my tickets for Friday night? Or am I more likely to get a good show with Charlotte?
You do as you please Princeton78.
At least we both know that Charlotte is a great dancer. :)
If they said she "broke the same bone" she's gone for at least 6-8 weeks, just for the bone to heal, not to mention time for physical therapy or whatever it takes for the bone to be strong enough to dance on.

Amneris--I had the same thought at first (about whether or not it was a real injury) since I had read some pretty bad reviews, but then I read that it happened DURING a show, which made it seem more legitimate--I don't think any actor would cut a performance short unless they had to. Even if she broke her foot, she shouldn't be out for good (unless the producers use this as a convenient way to change the cast).
Eileen,
Six to eight weeks puts us right in the middle of the NY previews... do you think they'll keep Christina on contract, or open with Charlotte?

UPDATE: Charlotte D'amboise will play Charity for the Boston leg of the pre-bway run, and Christina Applegate will wait for Broadway.

Okay hooray for "You Should See Yourself" back in the show!!!
Poor Christina. But this is good for Charlotte to get some Charity experience. I guess Belle Callaway will be playing Roxie on Broadway.
