CCM graduate collects New York cabaret award
Brandon Cutrell, a 1999 musical theater grad of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, is loooking a lot like Manhattan's crown prince of cabaret these days. He won a MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) Award this week for male vocalist to go with a prestigious Bistro Award from show biz industry weekly "Backstage" in March for best vocalist.
The vote-winning show was his "No Reservations." It's not on now, but you can catch his weekly Friday overnight stint at the Duplex in Greenwich Village.
Cutrell hosts a "Mostly Sondheim" open mic in the cabaret room. The one-time opera major is always good for a few numbers.
His full mantel doesn't mean he's quitting his day job at a marketing research firm soon, although resorts and clubs have been calling since his latest cabaret win.
He's thinking hard about his first CD, working title "Brandon Cutrell: No Reservations" "but I need a backer. If Carl Lindner wants to back the project, I'd happily call it 'Brandon Cutrell: The UDF Album.' It would be appropriate. I lived on UDF's frozen yogurt when I was at CCM. I also like 'Brandon Cutrell: The Chiquita Album.' "
