I'm just wondering if these were right, acute or obtuse?

Mostly using set pieces and backdrops.
Weren't the movie scenes in black and white and the reality scenes in color?
I saw the original Broadway production in 1990. I'll have to check the CD booklet and see if there are pictures.
Awww, I liked the idea of a City of Angles better.
I was in the Angel City 4 and, yes, real life was in colour, and film was B&W. All that I can say was really bitchy costume changes, and clever lighting, since makeup changes really aren't that easy. Also, we did the show on two levels, the top level was real life, and the bottom, film.
City of Angles? lol,I want to see that too

It's really something you have to see. Yes, the real characters were done in color and the fictional characters were done in black & white. Very clever lighting and costuming.
Thanks, Broadwayboy. That's one of the things I distinctly remember about the show. I also remember that Carolee Carmello left the show shortly after it opened to star in the tour of Chess (which I also saw). Who could also forget Rachel York singing, "Lost and Found".

Here's an example: Oolie, Stone's ectretary in the movie, starts singing "You Can Always Count On Me" in her black and white bedroom. She gets under the covers, turns out the light, and like three seconds later, the lights go back on and she is Donna - Buddy's secretary in real life - in a full color bedroom. She sings the rest of the song as Donna.
What happened was: in the dark she flipped over the blanket, which was grey on one side and brightly colored on the other, while a stagehand behind the back wall flipped the wall panels, which were build like venetian blinds, from their grey side to their colored side.

In one scene when Stone is combing the streets of Los Angeles actual film was projected behind him while she walked in sync to the image. Very clever.

There was a set for the exterior of the Kingsly mansion that was all grey stone with black and white striped awnings over the windows and grey topiary trees. In Act 2, it became Buddy Fiedler's mansion - the awnings were now yellow, and the trees were turned around to show thier green side.
Good Luck!
Sounds like something I would do in high school. Be sure to post pictures when you are done.
