I believe this was discussed at length some time ago. Don't have the thread handy. Some were excited but many called her age into question.

If Glenn is gonna do it in London they ought to get La LuPone to do it in New York. Not that she would, unless they made her an offer she couldn't refuse.

She was great in this 20 years ago...but if Elaine Paige can't sing these songs in the same key as she used to, then what about Glenn Close?

Thought Rita Moreno (west end) was better than Close, Clark, or Buckley. Never saw Paige (Karen Mason-who I love was on for her). All that being said. What about another 50 year old for the part?

Close was a good actor: Betty Buckley with Alan Campbell just broke your heart. She's Norma. (and BB sung it better).
Nowadays, maybe Christine Ebersole...(even a hologram of Patti Lupone wouldn't do it!)

This joke would work if you were suggesting Abe as Streisand's father in Gypsy, but since Norma is supposed to be older than Joe it really doesn't work here.

You're absolutely correct. Not a bad joke but no joke at all. I do think that Close is a bit long of tooth to revisit Norma.

I hope this transfers to NYC, I would love to see Gleen as Norma. She's the best, she has no competition. No one can act like her.

I loved Betty Buckley. I still remember the chills I got when she was singing. I wish I could have seen her in Grey Gardens.

I saw Glenn Close early in her Los Angeles run, and she was quite solid. Not very impressive singing, but fine acting.
I saw it again closing night. She had descended into high camp and was wringing every last laugh out of the material. It was disgraceful, her mugging. I'm assuming they reigned her in for Broadway. Closing night, Glenn made a curtain speech where she mentioned the death of Jackie Kennedy and the OJ Simpson Bronco chase. She also obliquely referenced the Patti controversy by saying "I'm very proud to be taking this to Broadway" or words to that effect.
I find it very sad that LA doesn't see these kinds of pre-Broadway runs anymore. How fun that was to have that show in town for so long!

I find this all slightly disingenuous of ENO. They play in a massive venue and charge typical opera prices--so most of the seats (And certainly the decent ones,) are more than typical musical theatre prices (ie very expensive.) Add to that this is just a semi-staged concert done by Lonny Price the way he has done semi staged concerts ad nauseum (and some I've mostly liked, like Company, while others, like Candide, I've hated.) That would be justifiable as a week long fundraising thing, but this is playing a little over a month (I believe,) which makes me all the more cynical about it all. I won't be in England anyway, but I'm happy to stick to my memories of seeing Dihann Carroll and Rex Smith and that ridiculously over the top John Napier set several times in Vancouver, in a decent sized theatre at relatively decent prices.
