I smell a hit in the making.
And it would be with at least a little of my money.

I would love to see Taye Diggs as Harpo! What do you think of the idea of Melinda Doolittle as Sophia? She interprets music so beautifully. If she could act the part I'd think she'd be an interesting choice. I'd like to see Fantasia do this on film; she's absolutely stunning on stage; but then again, the two mediums are two different ball-games.
Cheers,
Christopher

I say get Anika Noni Rose to play Celie and surround her with a plethora of film/tv actors: Queen Latifah, Angela Basset, Chandra Wilson, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, and even cameos by Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah herself.
I don't really like the score but would love to hear Rose's rendition of "I'm Here."

I could definitely see a film with Fantasia as Celie and Jennifer Hudson as Sophia!
This project would need a killer director though.
How about Spike Lee?

Posted: 12/6/07 at 10:27ami have to mirror the cry for Taye to play Harpo. he'd be awesome! :) but i honestly cannot picture anyone other than Elizabeth Withers Mendes playing Shug. she really should just do it. especially if they make it for TV and all...

I think this is a great idea. I think Steven Spilberg should direct this. I know he wanted to do (or rumor had it) Mary Poppins a while back and so if he is looking for a remake and a musical, this might be his (after he is done with the Farnsworth movie).
I think this movie can only work they way it was filmed-- on location--like the original movie. If they try to down-play that, with studio locations and shots, it real just ruin the movie and the realism to fill for any of the characters. I think one of the real reason why the original movie did so well, was the realism behind it and of course the acting. The movie and book touched so many people on every level, and if you take that away, the movie won't work.
Will Smith, Taye Diggs should be in the movie. I think that if they are cast in the right roles that everyone els who is cast will be make them shine as well. They both can sing and this could work.
As for the ladies, I would love to see any of the ladies mention in other threads. I do think JHud is great for Sophia, but for some reason I don't think she is old enough for the role, I would love to see someone like Queen Latifah, she could make it work.
Overall I think this film could work very well, as all films this would be different from the stage-version, OMG, what I would do to direct this piece...my opening of the film is to have the first number in a church. I also think it would be great to have many Celie's to see them age as well.
Anyway, I talked long enough...Oprah, if you are reading this, I would love to direct this piece.

Actually that was a joke... I am glad you got that...
I also think that Britney and or Harvey would make a great Celie!

"Television Movie" was also the first thing that popped into my head. Unless they get Tyler Perry to play Sofia, of course.

Posted: 12/7/07 at 12:26amActually y'all I heard that Celie was going to be played by this unknown actress named Gina Naomi Baez!! She's Dominican Republican though so they will be making her up a lot for the role. I hear that she can sing a mean "I'm Here" though.

Posted: 12/7/07 at 10:54amI hope it's better than the stage production, which had some nice moments, but relied a little too heavily on the original film to the point of recreating exact scenes on the stage. And cut the African Valley Girl costumes. With more mature and original direction and a few score/orchestration revisions it could be a wonderful film (and a better stage production), though nothing could come close to my love for the original film.

"I also think that Britney and or Harvey would make a great Celie!"
Why is it when we're throwing out casting suggestions for something, Harvey's name always gets thrown out as a joke?
And I agree. I personally loved the Africa sequence but I do not think it would translate well onto the screen.
