I think Tiffany Evans would be a gr8 Dorothy. She was the young girl that won Star Search a few years ago. I think she was on the Macy's Parade also.
Gr8 voice.
Hey I just found her site. She has some audio clips to listen to..Weird to hear her belt out And I'm telling you, but she pulled it off.

Marcy Harriell as Dorothy!!!!!!!!!
marcy harriell?
~ i think she had a phenomenal voice
but i don't *see* her as dorothy...
~ how about an unknown?
that would be great - a new discovery.
Stephanie Mills was 17 when she played Dorothy. Hinton Battle was 19 when he played the Scarecrow.
Think young.
But I'm glad you all want to see The Wiz on Broadway again! The original stage show was so imaginative and amazing.
And age is just a number. Some of us remain ageless!
I don't care what you think. I can pass for a woman in my early 20's why? I have more energy than women half my age.
I have passion and its contagious.
On my 40th birthday I was proofed.

Sure, as long as you keep using a ten year old picture as your icon.
Ted Ross, Mabel King and Lena Horne were the only people that made this disaster of a movie slightly watchable for me, at times. Miss Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell and Richard Pryor were all wrong for this movie. 'Brand New Day' was a well choreographed number and 'No Bad News' was pretty much what King had done on Broadway but I put this movie in the same class as "A Chorus Line" and "Paint Your Wagon" as horrible transfers from the musical stage to film.

SueleenGay - everyone has a right to their own opinions, regardless of their age
Corine2---If only casting directors and cynical audience members felt the way you do.
They do not.
pab---I agree with you except for Nipsey Russell. He and Lena Horne were the "new" bright spots in a film that had no others. Nispey was a total surprise. Ted Ross and Mabel King were welcome sights from the Broadway show, but somehow nowhere near as effective as they were on stage. Mabel had way too much makeup on. You couldn't even find her inside that get-up. It could have been Rosemary Clooney in there, for all we know.
I have no other kind words to say about the film, as it was a creative and financial disaster. The stage show is completely different in characters and concept.
I would love to see Andre De Shields play the Wiz again. He's still working up a storm and since there really is no age limit on his character... why not? What a great tie-in to a role he created over 30 years ago!
Play it Cool, of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. But don't you think it is odd that ANYONE would think that THE WIZ is the best version of THE WIZARD OF OZ? I really question anyone's judgment that would argue that.
Sueleen, why don't you just post your own opinion on the topic at hand? We can all make our own judgements about each other's opinions as we see fit.
Yes, Andre De Shields was a great Wiz! Just imagine, a Wiz who could actually sing and dance. How the hell they came up with Richard Pryor for that role I'll never know. De Shields is about to start work on directing a play (limited engagement) that will be performed down at McDougal early next year.
Sorry,
I don't love WICKED. I liked Wicked, but the Wiz has soul.
And I did not mean I liked it more than the film (The Wizard of Oz)
I like it much more than Wicked.

Loved the show. I was in t when I was 9. So much fun! The movie kinda scared me thugh. I don't know. It was just too weird.
Well, WICKED is not a "version" of THE WIZARD OF OZ. It is an original story that uses some of the characters from the Baum books. There is quite a difference. So perhaps you should change your original post to say THE WIZ is better than WICKED. Say what you mean.
What about Danelle Eugenia Wilson for Dorothy? She was the original Lil' Inez in "Hairspray."
I say LaChanze for Glinda and Sharon Wilkins for Eviline.
The Wiz is better than Wicked!
Just my opinion. Sorry Winnie.

"The Wiz is better than Wicked!"
On that point we are in total agreement.
I must say I did like the "Numbers Lady" in the film, did she ever say her name was Glinda? I don't recall, but she was like an old bookie, very funny. Nipsey was great as Nipsey Russell, But not as the Tin Man. Yes, Mabel King's make up was very hot in that film, they might have done more with less, which is sort of funny since I kept thinking Miss Ross needed SOME make up in that film, Some lashes or some - anything, she was trying to look younger with the no make up look and looked more like Miss Jane Pittman. Lena Horne was simply classy as always, I wish she were younger and able to bring HER show back to Broadway, Now that was a great show - One of those times when you knew you just spent an evening with a true Star. Lena is Magic!
~ lena horne was "glinda" in the film
"the numbers lady" in the film was "miss one"
Who was Evilene? Evilene looked like a man in drag.
Mabel King - Evilene
She was the mother on the TV show What's Happenin'in the 70s.

Glinda on Broadway was the fabulous Dee Dee Bridgewater, with that terrific, smooth voice of hers! She won a Tony for her glamorous performance. She's also a multiple Grammy winner.
I see her name pop up as a celebrated jazz singer and chanteuse... mostly in Europe. She's actually a mega-star in France.
...Man, that would be GREAT if they could lure her back to reprise her Tony-winning role in a revival. She still looks and sounds amazing. I sincerely doubt it, though.

Dee Dee Bridgewater being on the The Wiz original cast album made me seek out her other (later) work, and I 'm glad I did.
When The Wiz was first produced here in Australia in 1976 it was a reproduction of the Broadway production except the chorus was white. The principals were black with two imports, Dorothy was played by a young Andrea Frierson (Once On This Island) and the Tinman was played by Victor Willis who a year later was the original lead singer in the Village People.
