I am coming to NYC on December 18th, and need to get a hotel room for that night, hopefully in Times Square/Theatre area, at least within walking distance. I am looking for a hotel that I will survive in, but I am looking for as cheap as possible.

Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

I've stayed there twice. It's on 45th, between 6th and 7th. Their cheapest room is $200ish. That's the most decent quote I could find for a nice hotel in that location.

If you see The Time Hotel in any of your discount searches -- it's a pretty good place to stay. It's on 49th Street next door to the Eugene O'Neill.

I also need help:

We are a group of 6-8 and will fit in a hotel that has two double beds. We are staying December 18-22 which is close to Xmas, however we need to stay close to midtown in Manhattan. So 30-70th streets between Park and 9th Ave.

We want to pay less than $200 a night. Any suggestions?

THANKS!

For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. This is a really wild place. I had a less than great stay. (leaky tub and paint fumes from one of the artists painting a room on the hall) But, my best friend has stayed many times and loved it. I certainly found it very interesting and you can't beat the price.

If I were travelling alone I would try it again. This is NOT in the theater district.

Two years ago I traveled to NYC during the holidays and stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA for four days. I believe it's located at 47th st. and third avenue, only about a 10-15 minute walk to times square. I don't know what the rates are now, but even during the holidays it was only 75 dollars a night (and even cheaper for me because I split the cost with my partner). The rooms are simple, and you have to use a communal bathroom, but it's no different than staying in a college dorm (which I was anyway at the time, so it didn't bother me one bit). It was a safe, clean, and friendly place to stay for a couple days and definately better than spending the hundreds of dollars a night that other places were asking for. You have to understand that it's not the Hilton, but still a great value.

The wellington Hotel on times sq is $149 that night, and Milford Plaza on 45th and 8th is $179 so there are some good hotels under $200 nearer to Christmas, good luck!! and enjoy your stay there.

Try the Skyline Hotel on 10th Avenue at 49th Street. The neighborhood is kinda commercial and 10th avenue has heavy traffic but it has been recently renovated and the rooms are nice and clean. Not too far from midtown.

I don't think you'll find anything that cheap that close to Christmas. But if I find anything I will let you know.

I think I am probably interested in the Vanderbilt YMCA. Does anyone have any other info on it? Is it a safe walk after a broadway show from say Gershwin Theatre or Times Square to the Vanderbilt YMCA? Any info regarding the YMCA hotel, or area, would be great! Thanks!

I am going from Dec 18-21 and staying at the portland square hotel on 47th between 6th and 7th for $137 a night. I have stayed there before and enjoyed it. It's tiny, but clean and nice and convenient as hell. And it's not a shared bathroom!

Before I moved to NYC and I used to come in just for a few days to see shows and such, I stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA. It is an excellent place to stay. The rooms are tiny, so keep that in mind, but they're very clean, air-conditioned, and there's a cable TV in every room. When I used to stay there, like 3 or 4 years ago, I paid $70/night. I don't know what they're charging nowadays, but you should book your reservations online as opposed to calling them, because the prices online are a bit cheaper. http://www.ymcanyc.org/ There's also one on West 63rd Street, which is about the same distance to Broadway. But either way, you can easily walk to the theater district from either. From the Vanderbilt it's a few avenues, but not a big deal. From the West Side one, it's obviously about 13 street blocks to get to the Gershwin.

Is the Vanderbilt closer to times square, and is it safe walking to/from at night? Thanks!

I can't help you regarding the hotel, but anywhere in midtown is pretty safe (or unsafe) at night- in shouldn't differ because of your hotel. If you will get attacked in Times Square, you will no matter what direction you're walking in.

Yes, the Vanderbilt is closer to Times Sq.

And ANYWHERE in the city is safe walking to and from at any time of day or night.

I feel save walking at night. Last time we went, my wife and daughter suggested walking back to our hotel after shows at night. Which was at 30-32? & Broadway (Korea Town) We got a Red Roof for about $130/night+tax.
