Just curious how this "actors as the orchestra" thing is going to work. Don't you need all those instruments to accompany the singing?? If Patti Lupone is singing, who's playing the tuba?
Also, is this being presented with a special deal with the Musician's Union? It was always my understanding they had a pretty tight hold over the Broadway musical community.

Posted: 8/27/05 at 11:54amI like Mark Jacoby a lot but don't think his voice is right for the Judge at all. This production sounds so bizarre to me - I suppose I'll have to reserve my opinions and see it, even if only for the camp value. I love Patti, but don't think Cerveris is right for Sweeney at all. Only time will tell - hopefully I'll end up loving it (it IS one of my favorite shows of all time, and I've done a production of it regionally, so naturally, I'm skeptical)...we'll see....

Posted: 8/27/05 at 12:21pmStephen Sondheim yesterday at Ravinia was talking about this new production. He said it is "very creepy" and referred to the fact that it is much smaller "less Hal Prince" sort of a musical. The other characters play while a character sings. They aren't singing while attempting to play the tuba. Sondheim said people would be equally divided between liking it and hating it.

I am a bit of a purist, but I'm so excited to have "Sweeney" back on Broadway that I don't care. Besides, I think that as long as a directorial choice serves the material well then it's fine. The only thing I hate is when a director reinvents something just to show how "creative" he is. What a lot of directors don't realize is that it's his job to serve the PLAY and not himself.
I guess we'll see what kind of director Mr. Doyle is soon enough.
