I had heard that Donna Lynne Champlin was going to be playing Pirelli, but didn't want to say anything until it was released. So this has been welling up for a while:
What?! I'm all for non-traditional casting as long as it makes since. And I'm not sold on this (as amazingly wonderful and talented as she is).
I love Marc Jacoby!! I think he'll make a great Turpin
Me too! His voice is perfect for the role.

oooh Im Excited!!!!!YEA!!!!
Actually, Jacoby's voice is far from perfect for Judge Turpin. Mr. Jacoby is a tenor, and Turpin is a bass role.
That's what I was thinking MEF. A man who plays The Phantom is clearly not suited for one of the lowest bass parts in musical theatre.

This entire "Sweeney" revival, frankly, sounds like a bad idea. Having a tiny cast that has to play instruments - it almost sounds like a chamber orchestra piece, which I just don't see Sweeney as. The original production was really top notch - true, I never saw it (except on DVD), but I imagine it was quite a show live. Putting a woman in a man's role (Pirelli) strikes me as totally bizzare. Am I too much of a purist? This doesn't even sound like a revival - it sounds like a re-imagining, and so far, I don't like what I hear. AND, I will GLADLY admit I was wrong if/when it proves to be an amazing show.
SO I dont know how real this is but...

it says there is a Sweeney Todd movie coming out in 2006 ..
it's true- they originally wanted tim burton to direct- which would have been a great pairing. But I love Sam Mendes- american beauty is my favorite movie.
URgggg, Tim Burton please direct it ..
do you not like Mendes?, EDCT?
No, its not that, I just love Tim Burton!!
I know, me too!! he is definately my top three of directors. I think he really would have brought a great, fun vibe to sweeney.

This is the one that had Russell Crowe rumored to play Sweeney Todd and was discussed here a while back.

Sounds like a really good cast! Now i really want to see it!
As a huge pit geek, I'm very mixed on how I feel about this production. On the one hand, the idea of actors playing the instrument so each one is so featured and seen is something I'm excited for, but I'm also sad in the first time I see this show live to miss out on a full orchestra.
However, I feel much better knowing definitely that there is a clarinetist who from the who's-who seems like she'll be great at it!(I play clarinet if that wasn't obvious)...so that really excites me, though probably to the slight annoyance to everyone around me, I will keep applauding and cheering when she comes out/plays.

wooowww the film idea sounds wicked, and im almost glad Tim Burton didnt direct it....Tim Burton exceeds in things he has made up himself...he isnt great with taking other peoples work and combining his ideas with theirs.....so i think Mendes might do a better job here....and A.B is my allltime favourite film

I'm really excited. Every year the UC Musical Theatre graduates get to perform a senior showcase. So I already got to see the guy who plays Anthony perform! He was great too.
...and who has tickets?
oh yeah! thats right! CQTBOO!
Anyone know what Turpin's lowest note is??

I don't think it goes that low. In our production a 13 year old boy played the character without key change. While his voice had pretty much matured, he wasn't a real bass but he could sing it. I think it's how you color it.
I can see Mark Jacoby singing the role of the Judge. I dont think they would cast him if he had difficulty with the notes.
People were saying it's one of the lowest bass roles in Musical Theatre! I was expecting him to have to sing extremely low. It looks like a baritone can easily handle the role.
