Compulsion opened tonight at the Public, and so far i cannot find any reviews (Google was *not* my friend!) ... anyone know what the critics have said about this production?

i was googling a day too soon -- kept getting results for the berkeley rep run!

Why would you want to see Compulsion? It's a fictional tale based on true events. See the reading of "The Idealist" Wednesday night, and you can learn the true story with no distortion or fictionalization. It's a benefit reading starring Alison Pill, Tony Roberts, and Martin Vidnovic and the proceeds benefit the Anne Frank Foundation in Switzerland. Their website is http://www.theidealistonstage.com.

LOTS of interesting stories are ficitonal tales based on true events. Why does that mean the poster shouldn't want to see it?

I don't think the point of the play is to teach of Anne Frank's plight -- we know about that.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I thought it was pretty awful. An artful bore. I'm not a fan of Patkin's and his voice kind of grates on me sometimes, but he was suited for the part. It's just not a very well written play.

This seems to be getting at best a tepid response ... a little surprising, given the (overall) positive reviews from Berkeley and Yale Rep.
