Posted: 8/18/05 at 2:18amNo. Not even the 5th best version of the song I've ever heard. I saw her do it twice in the theatre and she was gasping for air just trying to get through it. Without that ultrasensitive mic on her forehead, she wouldn't have been heard much past the third row (Merman obviously didn't have that problem) A fine performer and wonderful in certain roles, but Rose was way too much for her.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 2:47amHave you heard the OCR with Merman? Have you heard Angela Lansbury's recording? Go listen to all 6 CD's of GYPSY then come back and tell us which one you think is best. Your opinion and it is no more, no less valid than anyone else's. My opinion? Merman still owns the role.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Ah. I have. I wasn't saying she's the best of the Mama Rose's. I'm saying...out of all the "Rose's Turn" numbers that are recorded (and live...but more specifically, recorded), I think that Bernadette Peter's acts and signs the hell out of that song.

Bernadette's performance was one of the most disappointing of the Broadway season. and I am a big FAN!
