Anyone agree with me when I say that Bernadette Peters singing "Rose's Turn" is one of the most incredible recorded songs in Musical Theatre? I saw it live and I have the recording and...wow.

No. Not even the 5th best version of the song I've ever heard. I saw her do it twice in the theatre and she was gasping for air just trying to get through it. Without that ultrasensitive mic on her forehead, she wouldn't have been heard much past the third row (Merman obviously didn't have that problem) A fine performer and wonderful in certain roles, but Rose was way too much for her.

She really seemed to be nowhere near her best in this show - miscast and quite unfortunately unwell for a considerable part of this run.

BUT.... Because she did do the role, We got the wonderful viciously spot on parody from Forbidden Bway! Not the BEST trade off but still- silver linings and all!!

Have you heard the OCR with Merman? Have you heard Angela Lansbury's recording? Go listen to all 6 CD's of GYPSY then come back and tell us which one you think is best. Your opinion and it is no more, no less valid than anyone else's. My opinion? Merman still owns the role.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Ah. I have. I wasn't saying she's the best of the Mama Rose's. I'm saying...out of all the "Rose's Turn" numbers that are recorded (and live...but more specifically, recorded), I think that Bernadette Peter's acts and signs the hell out of that song.

Bernadette's performance was one of the most disappointing of the Broadway season. and I am a big FAN!
