I actually thought Nikki was very annoying when she found out she won.
I wanted Ed Sanders to win.

"I actually thought Nikki was very annoying when she found out she won. "
My I ask, how?
Your first big movie is Hairspray and critics love your performance and the movie.
Your an eighteen year old girl from Upstate NY with big dreams and you land muliti- nominations for big awards and you win, um, what do you expect for her to sit and half smile and go "Oh thats nice, thank you."
I'd flip out and cry too, if I won a major award like that.

I thought Nikki's reaction was genuine and I was happy for her. She's adorable - the perfect Tracy.

Boy, is she overrated.
I do find her INCREDIBLY charming on screen, but to say that she gave the best performance by a young actress this year is quite a stretch, especially when she was going against Saoirse Ronan.
Oh well, hopefully Ronan will be remembered come Oscar time.
Julie Christie has Oscar #2 written all over her face.
Congratulations to Amy Ryan, a Broadway girl, for her award, I wouldn't be surprised if she took the Oscar home.

Posted: 1/8/08 at 3:47amI agree that her reaction was genuine. I don't think she expected to win at all. It's refreshing to see someone who is excited and grateful to win versus just going through the motions and reading a preplanned boring speech. She won a big award and probably the only one she'll get this year (no way she will win Golden Globe), she should be excited. I saw her in an interview where she said she is so disappointed about the strike because she has always dreamed of going to the Golden Globes and she is actually nominated but there won't be a big ceremony. Knowing this she needs to enjoy the big moments she had. It is a big deal, how many of us can say we have an award like that.

I don't see Hairspray winning any Golden Globes. I'm thinking that either Sweeney or Juno will get the Globe for Best Movie: Musical or Comedy, Depp will get the Globe for Best Actor: Musical or Comedy, either Helena Bonham Carter or Ellen Page will get it for Best Actress: Musical or Comedy, and I think anyone BUT Travolta will get it in Best Supporting Actor(I'm a bit p**** that he got nominated when Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen gave terrific performances in Sweeney).
Nikki might get nominated for an Oscar, but I don't see her winning it.

I can't even see her being nominated. There were soman great performances this year that topped her.

Nikki won't get nominated for an Oscar. No way in hell.
She's up against Julie Christie, Marion Coltillard, Ellen Page, Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, Laura Linney, Keira Knightley, Cate Blanchett, etc.

I can't see her in the Oscar race to be honest, but I actually do believe she's in the running for the Globe. I think it will come down to Page and Blonsky; they're both fresh faces in stand-out performances which the HFPA really likes to reward. I personally didn't care all that much for Bonham Carter's performance in Sweeney; I felt it was missing something; what that something is I still haven't pin-pointed. I hope she doesn't win. But I would love to see Blonsky win the Globe. Right now I believe Page is her toughest competition.
Cheers,

Love her as a person and in the movie and absolutely loved the movie. So YAY!!! Happy about the wins.
I hope she can pull a win at the globes, though it is highly unlikely as "lead". Too bad they couldn't squeeze her in as a supporting so she could have dominated the awards seasons.
Anyway, happy she's being nominated and winning something for her great work in hairspray. I don't think she's overrated at all, I hardly see the girl much anymore though I haven't been really looking.

"Too bad they couldn't squeeze her in as a supporting so she could have dominated the awards seasons."
What makes you think she would have dominated?
If she had been pushed in Supporting, I doubt she would even be up for a Golden Globe as the Supporting categories are not split into Drama and Musical/Comedy.

I know supporting ins't split into two categories making it harder to get a nomination, even so, Nikki still would have been nominated were she pushed as supporting simply because she was really the lead in a movie that's made over $100 million and also nominated for best musical. It would have been similar to the role of Effie in Dreamgirls, really being a leading role (even being lead on broadway) but pushed as supporting to get wins. Nikki would have been nominated simply because she's a lead being pushed as supporting. I think her role would have appeared more impressive to some had she been suporting as many people would have been taking about how she "outshined" the leads of the film. Since she was the lead, there really was no one for her to outshine.

Posted: 1/8/08 at 4:57pmShe won't get nominated for an Oscar and I doubt she will get the Golden Globe. Her role/acting definitely doesn't warrant an Oscar nomination.

I can't believe people are talking Oscar regarding her performance. Yes, it was cute; yes, it was charming; yes, it worked in the movie. NO, IT WAS NOT A PERFORMANCE WORTH OF A NOMINATION.
Even at the Globes if she were to win over Helena Bonham Carter's haunting portrayal of Mrs.Lovett (a portrayal much more effective than Blonsky's of a character a million miles more complex and thought-out than Tracy) or Ellen Page's exquisite turn in JUNO or Amy Adams' brilliant (and miles more charming than Blonsky's) star-making performance in ENCHANTED...well, I would just not trust film awards anymore.
She does not deserve an Oscar nod. over Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Amy Adams, Ellen Page, Laura Linney, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, Helena Bonham Carter, Keira Nightley, et al.
re: Congrats Hairspray and Nikki#41
Posted: 1/8/08 at 5:19pmI thought Nikki played the part as well as it could be played. Its not the deepest role, but she did play it to perfection!I personally was not impressed with Helena Bonham. I'm sure she is a great actress , but for me,nothing great=-)I don't think either of them will win.

While I loved Nikki in Hairspray, I think she has very little chance of being nominated for an Oscar. Her performance was good, but it definatly wasn't Oscar-worthy. Even if she was pushed in the supporting actress category, her chances of getting a nod would've been slim because there isn't a musical/comedy category for supporting actress at either the Oscars or the Globes, so she would've been up against much stiffer competition. As it is, she already has tough competition from Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, and Ellen Page, all who in my opinion gave better preformances in their respective films than Blonsky. It'll be interesting to see who gets the Globe.
re: Congrats Hairspray and Nikki#43
Posted: 1/8/08 at 5:33pmBut Virgo, in the case of Effie in Dreamgirls, Hudson's performance had been getting Oscar buzz for a while. Blonsky hasn't been getting any sort of Oscar buzz. It's not a fair comparison.
re: Congrats Hairspray and Nikki#44
Posted: 1/8/08 at 9:51pmPoor Adams, I wanted her to get Best Actress so bad! And I really thought Sweeney would get something, Best Director at least; oh well hopefully they will receive Golden Globes.
