Very sad news indeed. I reached out to him a couple of years ago via his website and he very politely replied.
A very good friend of mine saw him as "Conrad Birdie" and stated that he was infinitely more sexier than the portrayal Jesse Pearson gave in the film.
Gautier didn't do the film because he played the role for so long and was desperate to move on in his career - he had originally been attached to reprise the part when Gower Champion was still going to direct the film.

I didn't hear about it. It was in an e-mail he sent to me replying to mine. I contacted him through his website. It was about 5 or 6 years ago.
