Considering purchasing a season package at my local theater need some input

My local theatre, Sergerstrom in Costa Mesa is offering 2 season packages.


The first one which includes: The Lion King, 42nd Street, Cinderella, Newsies, Sound of Music, and Cabaret.


The second: If/Then with Idina, Illusionist, The Book of Mormon.


I'm definitely getting the season package with If/Then and Book of Mormon, thats a no-brainer. But, I'm on the fence about the first package.



I would love to see Lion King, but I have no idea about the others. What are people's opinion on the other shows? I have seen the Disney movie Newsies, and I didn't particularly like the movie nor any of the songs in it, but I've heard that the show is more enjoyable. And in regards to Sound of Music, is it anything like the movie? I loved the movie so I wouldn't mind seeing it on stage.


And I've heard Cabaret was similar to Chicago in terms of costume design and dancing.


Should I just go ahead and get both season packages? I'm lucky that all of these shows are coming to me locally, and in the end I'll probably go watching all of them. I'm just on the fence on a few of the shows.



Oh and in case anyone else was in the area, Wicked is also coming to Sergerstrom! It's going to be a fun year here.

"The first package is pretty great. While I wouldn't compare it to Chicago, do not miss this production of Cabaret. One of the best things I have ever seen."


I'll be sure to catch Cabaret.


Any other opinions? I'm still on the fence on 42nd Street and Newsies.

I'll just comment on the shows that I've seen:



The Lion King -- The staging is terrific and awe inspiring. The story is the same as the movie and is a let down. However, if you are interested in stage effects and craft, it is a master class.



42nd Street -- It is a big, no-brain tapping dancing fest. You know the plot (go on as an understudy and come back as a "star"), and it has some fun old songs. I saw the orginal version on Broadway and it was a good time. I'm not sure how cut down the tour version will be however. Perhaps someone can comment on that.



Cinderella -- I just saw this in LA. The production is very nice (especially the costumes), but for me the show was a bit of a snooze fest. It's a bit over long and the new book doesn't really add much to the story except a couple of subplots that I didn't care about.



Newsies -- haven't seen it



Sound of Music -- Did you see the Carrie Underwood TV version? That's pretty much the stage version. For me, the movie is pretty much perfect, and the stage version is inferior (just my opinion, of course).



Cabaret -- I saw this last year on Broadway, and of the 15 shows I saw last year, this was a highlight - an excellent production. And I agree with the previous posters, definitely see this if possible.
