Update: he’s now had to quit his job at Trader Joe’s due to all the publicity. Yes, Tyler Perry has offered him something, but he has already said that he’s not comfortable accepting an acting job offered to him as a result of this event unless he auditions for it first and is the right person for the role. I find that quite admirable. I wish him all the best.

I agree with others that there is no shame in honest work. I lost my job during the recession and it took me 9 months to find a salary job again but I was resourceful and did whatever random work I can get (hehe I felt like a Dolly Levi!)
Good for him for making it work!
From what I recall the unemployment check here in NYC is $420 per week and I do think it is possible to live in nyc in that budget (yes, living with a roommate, groceries with coupons, going to free events, rushing a show once or twice a month, riding a bike, etc.)

You're right! I just checked and the maximum weekly unemployment check in NJ is $681! Wow!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Owens quit his job, I don't think he qualifies for unemployment.
