Think about it. Much controversy has been blathered about the Chorus Line revival being almost exactly the same as the original production, and it led me to think about musicals that would be hard to do differently and it led to think of my favorite musical...Avenue Q.
When the Q closes, probably within the decade, a revival could be ages from now...but could it ever be done differently? Maybe an alternate; similiar-but-new apartment complex set, possibly with turntables, allowing us full access into the rooms. But really, how farther can you go? If you hop onto the no-name site, there are plenty of clips of totally unjustified illegal Argentinian productions (and somehow they snagged a copy of the book before it was even released!), which use a full chorus and no puppets...they paint their actors the color of the puppet.
That, of course, goes horribly. So, we've got to have puppets. But, and here's a major, major question: re-designed puppets that have no Rick Lyon influence or the same old puppets we know today? This could diversify the two shows, and maybe some script changes to reflect the times (the infamous "George Bush" lyric, and tons of other dialogue could be dated in thirty years or so)...or, of course, do you keep it in the early 00's and showcase this on the Playbill.
Then comes the ultimate question: will there ever be reason for reviving it again? It IS a great show, and won best musical, but it still is a novelty show, that works now, and not necessarily in 2030. What do you think?...
