Cry-Baby preview.
1. a cute show
2. how far can a show go on "cute"?
3. nice set and costumes
4. not one song is at all memorable
5. Thank God for the underused Harriet Harris who gives this show some true wit and weight. The best song goes to her. It is brand new and only sung with piano so far.
6. some great male dancing hunks who flash some buns at some point in Act 1
7. there is not one truly innovative moment in the music, perfs, or choreography. You have seen it all before.
The bottom line is that the show is fun but how far can you go on fun for $100 a ticket once the show opens? The gay crowd will drool over the male dancers and the camp value of the show but. . . is that enough?
The crowd had a lot of young people who ate it up; if you are over 30 and straight you might be checking your watch.
Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?
