LaVieHilary, you might like The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It's not about drug or alcohol addiction, but it's semi-autobiographical (that's a mouthful..) and it deals with a young woman having a mental breakdown. Not exactly like A Million Little Pieces, but I think you'd like it if you haven't already read it :)

There wouldn't be lights bright enough!

Just finished Making History, by Stephen Fry. Starting up on James Ellroy's Black Dahlia. Mmm, plot density.

MisterMatt: Yeah, I'm a huge King fan. Like I said, I thought the book was a bit on the silly side, but I loved it anyway. I read it in one day. As for Saving Fish, the only other Amy Tan I've ever read was The Bonesetter's Daughter, which I also loved... Should I bother with her other ones, or are they just way too "girly?"

I just finished Raymond Chandler's THE LONG GOODBYE, which was very good and made me wonder what on earth Robert Altman thought he was doing when he made that film.

I picked up David Foster Wallace's INFINITE JEST, which I have already read 4 times. I don't know if I'll get all the way through it, but it has been on my mind a lot lately.

RED HARVEST by Dashiell Hammett

Next up --

Probably THE THREE STIGMATA OF PALMER ELDRITCH, or maybe that new translation of Dumas' THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Richard Pevear.

Finishing HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Enjoying it for the most part, a bit long and ungainly. I'm surprised at how sanitized the movie was in comparison with the book.

Next up: some Philip K. Dick, probably.
