I just got the OBC of Barnum and I must say that I think the late Mr. Coleman has unseated Jerry Herman as my favorite composer.
But seriosuly, all of his scores are fantastic, and so varied. His composing skills ran all the way from the high-octane belting and riffing in "The Life" to showtuney goodness with "Sweet Charity", "Barnum", and "Little Me", to the jazzy sophistication of "City of Angels" which is my favorite score of all time.
The man had one of the longest and most varied career on Broadway and you'll be lucky to get more than 5 people to post on this thread.
Truly underrated and practically ignored. I love his jazz work, and really appreciate how varied his scores are from one show to the next. A great example is his going from the City of Angels sound to the world of Will Rogers Follies in such a short timeframe.

OMG!!! We broke the barrier! More than 5 people posted on the Cy thread.
It's a great day for BBW.
I love Cy's City of Angel's work best of all. He was also responsible for the theme to Hugh Hefners "Playboy Club" TV show in the mid sixties. This was just the tip of the iceberg where his work outside Broadway is concerned.

Cy's work is just fabulous. City of Angels, of course, is just amazing. Perfect in every way. Little Me and Will Rogers Follies are two really great Coleman shows. I just wished he was able to finish the shows he was working on before his death. What a great composer.
I remember when BARNUM first opened and the cast album was yet to appear (in Australia) I stumbled upon his BARNUM jazz album, bought that. When the real cast album appeared, I prefered the jazz version!
SO underappreciated. I've never seen a production of Little Me, but I've seen productions of all his other major shows, and I freaking loooooove City of Angels and of course, Sweet Charity. <3
