Cynthia stopped show for phone

just wanted to add to the boards, that today at Color Purple (6/12), Cynthia Erivo called someone out in the audience for a ringing phone!

It was during the scene where Mister's father visits, and she spits in his drink. A phone rang as she was about to say her last line of that scene, she started to say it, paused as the phone kept ringing. Then tried a second time and stopped as the phone continues to ring. Finally, she turned to the audience and said "please answer that phone". The audience burst into applause, let Cynthia continue and then the audience again went crazy. The performance continued perfectly.

Bonus was Heather Headley trying very hard not to crack up.

Besides this unfortunate interruption, the cast was amazing and there was so much energy on stage!

I would have died seeing Heather Headley's reaction to this on stage!

Sucks that she said "answer it." More accurate and appropriate advice would have been "turn it OFF and don't bring it to the theatre if you don't know how to turn it off, and if you can't be without your phone than just don't come to the theatre."

i dont blame her. I was at TCP on Friday and there was a ton of cell phone disruption, including an accidental Siri, an alarm, a couple of text notifications and the man 2 seats away from me was even taking pictures.

Yes! It was her normal British accent! Even though she said "please answer", you could hear in her voice how annoyed she was. Especially after attempting to start the line twice. And on Tony day.

Jbroadway- I'm so sorry your audience had so many disruptions! Ours was actually a really great audience besides the one phone.

The audience when I saw The Color Purple was filled with people texting and eating chips.

Good for her! When I saw TCP, someone's phone started ringing in the middle of "I'm Here". Luckily they silenced it quickly.

I was there as well. to me the phone sounded like it was part of the show. The phone was loud enough that it seemed like it could have easily been background music. As someone who didn't see the show before when Cynthia kept saying the line it sounded like it was part of the show. I don't think it was a British accent because i didn't even realize she had a British accent until the end. On a different note, I don't know how the show normally but oh boy it might have been one of the greatest performances I've seen on stage. Everyone was really into it, the audience was amazing. Cynthia got a standing ovation after I'm here. It was just phenomenal. Also it was really touching for them to do a moment of silence. Everything about the performance was just amazing. Chills the entire show. Also it seemed the cast was also a bit surprised on how energized the audience was.
